Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

Dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is sweet and spicy, lots of black licorice and caramel. Flavor is sweet with cloves, anise, and caramel overtones. Just enough of a bitter kick in the finish to balance out the sweetness. Thankfully, it is quite different than your typical christmas seasonals. If you like black licorice, you’ll probably like this beer.

2004, tried this with no expectations. Dark amber brown with a fluffy head that settled nicely. Aroma of Christmas spices. This was a nice seasonal/spice.

Dark beer with an initially frothy head, christmas pudding, coffee and chocolate aroma. The flavour is spiced and fruity with a christmas pudding like edge. Overall a reasonable beer.

Nearly opaic while brown around the edges and a full tan head. The aroma is earthy and spiced, there is a unique licorace and hop aroma as well. Strong spiced flavor and feel is the predomenant flavor. There is a bit of a thick chocolate malt flavor sitting below the spice that is a nice balance.

Anchor takes OSA in a different direction for 2004. 2004 OSA is a toned down version of past years offerings. Fruit, ginger, pine, and roasted chocolate malts are evident. Molasses nose, and medium body. Enjoyable and quaffable!

Bottled. Dark brown, small head. Pine needles in the aroma, spicy and malty also. Malty and roasty, with a fair amount of spice present. An interesting beer, not one I could drink a lot of though.

Muddy brown color with a thin light brown head. Aroma of cinnamon and ginger-bread. Flavor of cinnamon and ginger-bread with a lightly sweet finish. Light to medium body, soft carbonation. I think I prefered the 2003, it was more heavy on the ginger-bread.

Deep red color, appears black when not held to light. A tannish head sits on top, and lends great lacing to the beer. Aroma is sweet fruit, and a little bread, somewhat yeasty. Flavor is cherry, licorice, ginger, cinnamon, clove, and sweet malts.
