Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

Deep red color, appears black when not held to light. A tannish head sits on top, and lends great lacing to the beer. Aroma is sweet fruit, and a little bread, somewhat yeasty. Flavor is cherry, licorice, ginger, cinnamon, clove, and sweet malts.

good beer! It had a lot of spice notes hence the style. Not much in the way of hops but stil a good brew. Poured a nice brown color with an brownish-tan head. Had some pine notes in the aroma but mainly ginger to it.

Dark mahogany colored, lots of spices such as ginger and cinnamon maybe, not over the top though. Some licorice and dark fruits also. Unique.

Dark brown body with a tall brown head. Raisins, licorice, juniper, spices, hops and blackberries... Definitely more bitter and dry than I expected, medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Original.

Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Odd spicey aroma. Taste is licorice, ginger?, clove?, and other spices. Hints of pine, or the christmas candle that burns every year at my parents house. Spice taste lingers long after each sip. Unique brew. Points for originality.

Bottle
Quite chocolatey, and more mellow and balanced than previous years. Pine character somewhat subdued in this issue. A good dessert beer. Sweet caramel in aftertaste.
