Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

Draft at the Grey Lodge in Philly. Good beer. I was surprised it had a slight hop bite to it. NIce and balanced.

Dark red-ish brown colour. Dense head. Sweet-ish liquorice aroma. Roasty flavour with notes of liquorice and spices (cardamom). Somewhat thin finish. Is the recipe really different from last year?

Dark ruby brown color, foamy tan head. Very malty, plenty of spice, nutmeg, anise. Well balanced, not overly spicy or malty. Some dryness on the finish, light bitterness. Medium bodied and pretty creamy. Very nice.

I’m not sure what it was about last year’s batch but I was a huge fan. This year all those spices swirling around seemed to pick up a few bad habits and the outcome was a touch too perfumey. Big clove and cinnamon kind of spiciness here mixed with a sweet malt profile gives it a flavor I (alone) found interesting enough, but not as enjoyable as last year. Very piney, and actually rather friendly mouthfeel, reminiscient of hot cider with that spicy tingle and warmth of alchohol. Perhaps not as successful as last year’s batch, but as intended a fun and interesting experiment that will certainly draw my attention next year.

Tasted 12/2004
Aroma: some hay, grass, mustiness, slight sweet bubble gum or grape aroma, all-purpose fruit flavoring scent
Appearance: same as 2002 and 2003
Flavor: slighty soapy, some medicine flavors, hop bite, some staleness, tree bark
Palate: smooth with dry, hoppy bite. Aftertaste of hops and burnt malts

12oz. bottle: The beer fills the glass with a slightly ruby colored brown brew. There was a bit of a tan head on it, but it died down quickly. An interesting arome. Very spicey, but not overly done. I can’t quite pick them out, but they are slightly different from some of the normal spices you get in holiday beers. There actually is a hint of a Christmas tree smell to it. The taste is quite nice. Medium malt body, but not much sweetness making its way through. Somewhat dry taste, with hints of licorice and pine. It really works quite well!
