Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

Bottle. Dark mahogany with a fluffy beige head. Nose: licorice, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, coffee, prunes and raisons. Flavor: nutmeg, coffee, chocolate, walnuts, hazelnuts and cinnamon. A yummy dark holiday fruitcake in a glass.

Pours a dark reddish brown. Aroma and flavor match well with a nutty taste followed by nutmeg and spices. Flavor is so nutty it seems like I’m sucking on a walnut shell.

Dark brown with hints of red and black, short tan head, good lacing. Chocolate caramel malts mixed well with cinnamon spicyness and a slightly hoppy and dry ending.

Poured the darkest mahogany possible before using the word "black," nice lasting creamy head. Aroma of gingerbread, cinnamon, nutmeg, but all very understated. Gingerbread flavor dominates the taste, but very faint cinnamon is perceptible, along with a finish of nutmeg and maybe a hint of cloves. Great Christmas beer. Although clearly a spiced beer, it is a beer first and foremost, and does not become overwhelmed by the surrounding spices.

I look forward to this brew all year. 2004 reminded me much of the 2002 with a sprucy or is it cardamum flavor? Solid from start to finish with a rich mouthfeel. I’ll be buying this up in quantity when spring kicks in and storing it for special occasions.

Bottled. Dark brown with a thick, beige head. Hoppy, nutty aroma with chocolate. Fresh with late bitterness and prune.

The color was was of a dark ale that was enjoyed during Christmas 2004. It had a flavor of spices and hops. It was well balanced. This was a joy to drink. Looking forward to next years. Happy New Year to all!

Now there is a Merry Christmas--well eve that is. Sweeter than the 2003 more like the memories of the 2002. Looks like Dr. Pepper; smells like Christmas candels, tastes like everything minus the egg nog. Delightful treat.
