Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

OK, if the 1999 was evergreen fir and the 2003 was fruit cake, this one is a black stout flavored with ginger. I rather liked it, although my friend Bill C describes it as cola with ginger. Stands up fine next to spicy Indian or Indonesian food, with good malt and sweetness and that ginger again. Certainly lacks the complexity of the otherAnchor special ales from previous years.

Pours deep brown with burgundy highlights under a wafer thin tan head. Luscious aromas of dark fruits, spruce, pine and an array of spices (ginger, cinnamon and allspice stand out). Mouthfeel is medium-bodied but silky smooth due to a restrained carbonation. Beautiful flavors of dark fruitcake, figs and gingerbread abound. A benchmark winter warmer for sure.

Dark brown coloured body, fairly transparent with a nice smallish tan head. Aroma of pine, prunes, nuts and molasses. Medium-bodied; Nice spicey flavour with the sweetness coming out as well. Aftertaste shows a lot of character with some fruits hidden also. Overall, a good beer-definitely full of ’holiday’ character. A good vintage to hold around for a while and have some tastings. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Total Wine in Landmark (Alexandria), Virginia on 06-December-2004.

Pours a DEEP red color, appears black when not held to light. An oily tan head sits on top, and lends great lacing to the beer. Aroma is sweet fruit, and a little bread, somwhat yeasty. Flavor is cherry, licorice, ginger, cinnamon, clove, and sweet malts, with a porter-ish roasted backbone. Very nice.

This was a good beer. Not as piney as I had expected, but year after year, this one hits the spot. Try it or save it and compare next year.

Pungent spicy aroma, over a nice dark brown body, flavor is spicy, ginger, chocolate, fruit, and potpourri, interesting as usual. Finished slightly bitter and warming. Good.

Wow--this is a good beer. I must admit, I rarely drink as much beer as I did when I bought this great brew. Quite dark, with spicy flavors and a nice spicy aroma. This is definitely a Christmas brew. Gotta love it. Cuz I know I do. It has a sweetness to it that you’ll love.

a pretty damn good winter beer, and it blows away winterbraun (lost coast). dark red color, almost brown - spicy aroma, and equally spicy taste. this one is much thicker than last years, and that is a good thing. im gonna put these away and let them sit for a while, because drinking more than 1 of these in a sitting is almost out of the question due to the sweetness and thickness of this beer. a damn fine winter brew, as to be expected from one of my personal favorite breweries.
