Commercial Description:
This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

A pitch black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of herbs and spruce. The flavor is very sweet, but very soon a very strong spicy note hits you, at first with a herbal note, which in time is over ruled by a note of spruce, which leads to a dry bitter end, out of which grows notes of oranges and cloves. I find the body a bit thin.

Found this stuff at Downtown Bar & Grill in Brooklyn. Aged two years (sampled in Oct. 2006) Pours a deep brown/burgundy with a small tan head. Huge ginger aroma. Malty flavor. Has a junipery and ginger like spice background, soysauce, tea leaf, tobacco hints and a sugesstion of dark dried fruits (figs). Smooth.

Dark reddish brown with no head. A pleasnt aroma of fig, caramel and licorice. In mouth, a bland chocolate malt, astringent body, a tad unbalanced. Dégustation de Vieux Stocks III, Oct. 13, 2006.

12oz bottle via trade with Irishboy! - Thanks Richard! - Pours dark brown with a huge offwhite head that stays real well and laces the glass. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, nutmeg, and pumpkin. Flavors of chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, nutmeg, vanilla, and light hops on the finish. Smooth creamy palate and medium body.. Good carbonation.

Not like what the 2003 was at all. The body is much lighter. Not as much winter spices. More malt than the year before. This beer is not as much as a standout.
