Commercial Description:
This is our special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons appears born anew.

Editor’s Note: due to the significant similarity in style and strength from year to year (despite potential differences in the exact spice blend), this beer is no longer separated by vintage.

bottle (asheft) 2007 - dark brown beer with a thick beige head. Spicy aroma like cinnamon. Flavour has a lot of fruits and spices.

Christmas 2009 series: Aroma of licorice, dark chocolate, plums, almonds. Appearance is dark brown with mocha head. Flavor matches the nose. Palate is lightly lively and creamy. Pretty good stuff.

35.5cl bottle from Systembolaget. Best before 2010-09-01. This is the 2008 vintage. It poured a dark, redish-brown colour with a medium big with an off-white creamy head that settled down slowly in the glass. Aroma is bitter and a bit sweet. Notes of pepper, pine, ginger and sweet malts. Very nice. The flavour is also spicy. Notes of citrus, ginger or gingerbread. A bit thin though. It has a short aftertaste. Although the flavour is a bit thin and watery compared to other winter ales, it’s a nice beer overall.

From a 12 oz bottle this Ale pours a mahogany color with a tan head. The aroma has a LOT going on - Pine, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses, ginger, plenty of pine and spruce - Almost smells like a Christmas Tree... which made me a little nervous. The flavor is full of citrus, spice (lots), ginger, malts, clove and pine. Nice solid mouthfeel with moderate carbonation - nice dry finish. This one is a winner for sure.

Bottle. Poured blood-red with a small tan head. Spicy aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, and yeast. Taste is equally as spicy; notes of cardamom, nutmeg, and sweet maltiness. Relatively thin body, but it goes down easy. Pretty good.

A dark reddish-brown beer with a nice foamy head. The aroma is spice filled & smells so much like Christmas. It really reminds me of some old ladies house around Christmas time or a scent filled broom for your home. The taste has a variety of spice, with clove being identified. The most Christmasy beer I’ve had.

Anchor Steam "Our Special Ale" is the beginning of the holiday season. Though the taste is a bit different every year somehow the taste of a Christmas tree comes through. My husband always finds it for me to make my holiday perfect. This is the taste of the solstice.

Anchor Special 2009 From the bottle. A- deep in color with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Served in a tulip so I didn’t get a good head on it. A little bit of lacing S- malt & nutmeg with a slight hint of cinnamon. could have sworn I smelled sassafras T- interesting and not what I expected. Vanilla was the strongest flavor, followed by the nutmeg. This tasted a lot like a rootbeer float to me. seriously M - wonderfully thick D - it was good, glad I tried it but won’t be having it again this year

2009. Pours a dark brown. Aroma is spice with a slight floral hops. Taste is strong anise with an undertone of molasses and malt. Not bad, but the spice is a bit strong for my taste.
