Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Deep deep deep brown with a milk chocolate head. Smells of delicious dark malt though not especially roasty with strong hints of chocolate. Taste is smooth chocolate which follows into a bitter finish that is more cocoa bitter than hop bitter. A fantastic porter.

(Sample from November 17, 2006 Beer Club Meeting; Sample from December 14, 2007 Beer Club Meeting; 22oz bottle at home on June 20, 2008) Popped the cap, poured the amber-brown brew into a pint glass, and watched the light brown foamy head form, which holds itself well on top the solid mohogany/black porter. Aroma is roasted and malty. Flavor is uniquely bitter and roasted. Medium malt body, coats the tongue with a tasty film of spicy, malted bitter. A great comination of texture and flavors on the palate... very enjoyable. Each sip is just as good as the previous, allowing the tongue to open up to additional flavors of chocolate and spice. Rich, but not too complex or heavy. I’d score this higher only if it had a better palate - I think I would enjoy a slightly heftier body. All in all, can’t complain about this can’t-go-wrong beer!

Bottle. Pours an almost opaque black with ruby highlights. Aggressive pour resulted in a 3 finger tan head and great lacing. Nose has some dark fruits, mellow coffee and chocolate aromas. Taste is milk chocolate, prunes and coffee with a powdery cocoa flavor in the finish followed by some hop bite. Medium mouth feel. Good stuff.

Bottle. Very malty smell of toffee and chocolate, also roasted and nutty, quite sweet - an extremely nice smell. The head is large, brown and creamy, long lasting; the body is black. Light acidic start, then it gets a little bit more bitter, then it gets sweeter and the finish is finally bitter again. Rather long duration. Medium to full body, creamy and oily texture and a soft carbonation. A very nice Porter!

I’m amazed at the rating of this beer! I’m realy not that impressed. The aroma was pretty good. Nice dark color with a tan head is to be expected, but the flavor was terrible. Sorry if I offend anyone but... I didn’t like it. And there was a little harshness on my palate. Didn’t like this porter.
