Mar 27, 2008 This beer is smoking hot. Pours deep black with a nice thick creamy head on top. Aromas of roast malt, caramel, coffee, and maybe a hint of citrus. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, and malt. I can see why so many love this great beer.

Mar 23, 2008 bottle poured to an English pint has a dark black color and a huge three finger head that melted down the glass leaving sticky foam down the inside. aroma has dark malt, plumb, fig, smoked roast, and light peppery hops. flavor is somewhat sweet with roasted malt, coffee, and caramel. hits of chocolate mix in with the malt mix. mouth feel is medium and a bit chewy. hops disappear and only come through a little in the finish mixing with some bitterness. actually a good porter that is easily sipped away.

Mar 23, 2008 12oz bottle. Dark brown with light brown slowly fading frothy head. Biscuits, toffee and caramel on the nose and coffee, caramel & chocolate on the tongue. Smooth malty finish with a mild sugar aftertaste. This one went down nice & quick.

Mar 21, 2008 A fabulous porter. Pours a dark brown, light tan head. Head fades fast with no real lacing. Roasted aroma and a chewy roast flavor with hints of coffee. Very smooth, dry finish with a roasted flavor that really lasts.

Mar 20, 2008 Pours very dark brown with a thin tan head that leaves a little lacing. Very week earthy aroma. Nice sweet malty flavor though with a punch of coffee in the middle and a light but smooth roasted hop finish. A little thin but not too bad.

Mar 20, 2008 THOUGHTS: A really nice beer. I was very surprised by this one. I knew anchor did California commons well, but I didn’t know they did incredible porters too. I think I will be trying more styles of anchor beers in this new year. (Had this on New Year’s Day.)
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown that was black in the glass with slight red highlights and an average, tan head. The aroma was moderate to heavy roasted, chocolate (like hot cocoa mix and chocolate syrup) malts and very light hops. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic; while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet and lightly biter with an average duration. The flavor was mostly roasted malt with a little bit of bitter chocolate and just a hint of hops in the finish. The medium body was a little oily and a little dry with lightly fizzy carbonation and a moderately astringent and lightly chalky finish.
