Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Thanks to akevitt for sharing. Pours a dark brown body with foamy, light brown head. Aroma of chocolate and caramel with a hint of taffy. Initially, flavors of sweet malts and dark chocolate are present, with the chocolate becoming more dominate in the aroma and taste as it warms. Medium-bodied and smooth mouthfeel. Slight mocha finish with a tinge of hoppiness.

12 fl. oz. bottle, St. Regis Hotel, San Francisco, 21st Feb 2008. Pours pitch black with a small head. All the aromas you’d expect from a porter are present and correct - rich malt, bitter coffee and dark fruits. Likewise in the flavour. Palate is fine too, but while this is a nice porter, it’s not ’wholly superior’ as the commercial description claims. Give me Fullers first, please!

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark dark brown/black with tan head that diminishes with noticable lacing. Aroma is of carmely and toasty malts with almost a metallic scent here and there. But wow, the taste is where its at. Im not generally a big porter fan but this blew me away. It has a very delicate and complex balance between toasted malt, bitter hops and the sweetness of the chocolate and coffee and even banana flavors. These all play off eachother and then it finishes oh so smooth with a very balanced bitterness. And to top all of this off, the mouthfeel is also great. Silky smooth without being too heavy and just the right touch of carbonation. A suprisingly drinkable porter. This is a wonderful beer, two thumbs up!

Pours a dark chocolate brown with a nice thick beige residual head. Rather lively carbonation on the palate. Unsweetened chocolate, dark roast coffee, burgundy, dried sweet plums. Medium body with some hop bitterness in the finish. Smooth and highly drinkable. Stands above the average porter, but does not quite emphasize its qualities to thoroughly entice the palate. - Very good.

12 oz bottle, dark dark brown body with a foggy light brown head. Very flavorful and tasty porter, not at all watery, but not too thick. Delicious!

We really enjoyed this beer! Poured from the bottle a beautiful rich black color with a creamy tan head -- just watching it pour is a treat. Very rich flavor, dark, somewhat bitter, chocolate and mocha. Our only personal complaints would be that it finished a bit bitter to us, and sat just a tad heavy on the tongue. Those are minor complaints, though, and nothing that would keep us from agreeing that this a superior Porter.

12 oz. bottle - Poured black with nice tan head. Smelled like every other porter which is light coffee, sweet chocolate and also nutty. Taste is smooth, alot of hazlenut flavor. A really nice porter, easy to drink and alcohol is not detectable.

My first porter. Rich roasted malted barley, very lite bitterness. Dark black in color. Flavors of coffe, chocolate. Complexity never tasted so good. Top two beers for me.
