Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

12 oz bottle: Nice and dark. Notes of coffee and chocolate. Excellent representation of a porter. Very drinkable, if somewhat heavy.

Wow. Poured deep and solid black. I tried to see through it to no avail. Roasted aroma and a roasted flavor through out. Coats mouth nicely. Hides alcohol content well. Top notch choice. EDIT: Noticing a buttery after taste in this just as the Anchor Steam Beer.

Poured a nice large tan head. Beer was a wonderful dark that showed red with light shining through it. The aroma was this very fruity, possibly plum, and roasted malts. The flavor first hits with the fruit that you smelled, follows with a chocolate malt and finishes with the slight bitter of the hops.

Poured from a bottle. Has a nice dark black color with a nice foamy brown tan head. Aroma is not overwhelming. Has a nice taste of roasted malt, caramel, smoky and coffee tasting with a hint of chocolate. I likey.

12oz bottle from Degarth. Dark brown pour with only very slight hints at some red throughout. Creamy, bubbly dark tan head that is mostly lasting, and leaves a thick layer of foam. Spotty drip lacing. Dark vinous fruits, raisins, figs, tobacco, chocolate and molasses. Also get a sense of boozy soaked fruit bread or something similar. Also a bit of a sour twang, presumably from the hops. My only complaint is I wish the aroma was a little more up front, but that’s a small nitpick. Tons of roasted and charred malts on the fore, then segueing into sweet malts and chocolate, and a healthy dose of molasses. Sugary sweetness at the very end of the swallow, along with some ripe dark fruits. Very smooth, lightly creamy mouthfeel. Medium astringency, but very easily drinkable. Finish is in turns roasty, lightly bitter, sweet and slightly tart. Phenomenal, and the first thing Degarth ever told me the truth about.

Bottled, consumed on 12/17/07. Pours a clear, dark brown. Makes a nice tan head that quickly reduces to a thin skin. Grape and mocha aromas. Thin, smooth mouthfeel. Astringency present but understated. Sharp yet subtle sourness with hint of grapes again. Touch of sweet maltiness. Mild bitterness emerges on finish, segues into a fleeting chocolate note. A fine porter.

This porter wasn’t as good as I hoped, but it wasn’t bad by no means....Great use of roasted malts and hopes. Good head retention and nice color. Would drink again.
