Light layer of tan head that walks away whistling directly. Roast and sweet caramel on the nose. Plenty of sweet malt to balance the roast in the palate; from start to finish this is essentially a marriage between sweet and roast with a bit of hop flourish at the end. Some fizz in the body, and it stands up well, but it’s somewhere between chewy and quenching and I’m not sure whether I like it--sometimes yes, sometimes no. This is a very good example of what I would consider a mainstream porter. TaktikMTL (2786), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 6, 2000 Roasted, toasted, rich, bitter, & chewy, with just the right hint of chocolate aroma. Strong mouthfeel. I love the burnt flavor! Abstractly intricate ’Brussels Lace’ patterns form on the inside of the glass. Not too overly sweet like many porters. What a great beer! | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 13, 2007 Pours a gorgeous near-black brown, deep mahogany at the edges. Light brown head, thick and lacy. Chocolate, faint molasses, subtle fruit note. Initally sweet chocolatey flavour dominates, while a port-like plummy fruitiness sneaks in at the end. Finish is a satisfying stemmy bitterness. Rich and full mouthfeel (in contrast to the Baltika 7 I just finished). Absolutely delicious-- epitomizes what I love about a good porter. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 3, 2006 Pours very dark with large bubbled light brown head. First aroma seems a bit fruity almost like a barelywine. Then some dark roasted malts, breadiness and chocolate malts intercede. The flavor starts off mild and then some malt sweetness and roasted malts build up toward midway with a hint of dark fruit. The taste ends with a nice roasty maltiness. riversideAK (2766), Shoreline, Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 28, 2007 Aroma of sweet coffee. Like a sweet starbucks drink. Pours black with absolutley no head retention whatsoever. Flavor is more coffee. Sweet roasty burnt malts. Some roasted nuts as well. A little bit of metallic notes. This is a pretty thick beer as well. Sweet, roasty, and nice. Beershine (2754), Traipsing Around, Cambodia
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Oct 27, 2008 Looks great. Is opaque dark brown and the tan head is thick and luscious. Lacing is lovely. Aroma is pure quality. Roasted malt, fun asphalt smells, chocolate, rich enticing earth. Creamy, gulpable mouthfeel. Chocolate, cream, mellow, balanced, nothing burnt, nothing bitter. Just nice quality creamy chocolate-forward porter. A really solid go-to beer! DruncanVeasey (2753), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 12, 2007 More like some of the roastier Belgian heavyweights than a porter, but who gives? This is a great beer. Oily pitch pour with a creamy beige head. Sticky, malty snout with sniffs of vanilla, molasses (probably), walnuts, raisins and espresso roastiness. Fudgy malt, xmas pudding, charred cocoa bitterness. A teaspoon of Marmite. Afternotes of licorice...and more charred malt roastiness. Really sticks around. As creamily bittersweet as I knew it would be. Worthy of the gold-rimmed Rochefort snifter.
