Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

I owe this rating due to a forum post DaSilky1 made months ago pointing out that I hadn’t rated this yet and to Shadey for buying me a bottle so that I could. I didn’t think much of this beer the first time around but man have I changed my mind.

Near black colour. Aroma is chocolatey, slightly sharp (acidic). Slightly roasty, acidic, toasty with chocolate overtones and mocha highlights. Really cool beer - like a mix between the assertiveness of 21st century porter and the complexity of 19th century stuff (yes, I was around back then).

Dark color. Some malt aroma; phenol. Malt mouthfeel, some roasted malt, caramel, phenol again! (maybe too warm).

Black color, brownish persistent head, nice perlage. Pleasant nose of malt, roasted malt; light medicine. Excellent mouth feeling, wrapping, roasted malt, light coffee, light liquorice, roasted nuts, malt, some sweetness. Powerful final, long, a lot bitter and with a bold liquorice character.

Pours black with tiny off white head. Aroma has chocolate and burned notes. Sweet burned flavor, coffee notes and chocolate. Old time porter that still rocks!

Delicious porter -- aroma is inviting chocolate roasted malt. Taste is of that, together with mild hops. For a porter, this beer is quite rich.

Bottle from Utobeer. Very dark ruby colour with thick lasting beige head. Nice blackcurrant/blackberry fruit nose. Bit of liquorice and US hops too. Good in mouth and slightly oily. Finish has more black fruit and tar.

Draught
Dark ruby, almost opaque black. Cloudy beautiful expresso head. Roasted and berry aroma. Medium-bodied, roasted, crisp and hoppy flavor. Aftertaste has soapy and sweet hoppyness.

This pitch back beer has a nice, creamy head. It’s a nice porter, that is initially a bit thin, but it gains terrain in the flavour and the finish is long. It has notes of coffee, a bit of licorice and a nice bitterness. A really nice porter, but I think it is a bit to neutral in the long run, where I would prefer more bite.
