Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 12 April 2008) Black colour with ruby hints, creamy pale brown colour. Roasted, malty nose with notes of chocolate, coffee and hints of smoke, tar and ashes. Roasted, malty taste with tar, liquorice, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, dark fruit and cocoa bitterness. Slightly sweet. Lovely, complex porter with lots of character.

[194-20070122] 12floz. Smells like a bit of beef was sitting in a sweet woody oak barrel deep in the thick of a forest. Dark brown black body with a big creamy medium-lasting light brown head. Lightly sweet chocolate malt flavour with an initial bitterness blending into a sweet aftertaste. Medium-full body, not too thick. Very well-blended flavour, texture and aroma, quite impressive.

Bottle: Light chocolate aroma is a little weak. Pours a brownish-red with a nice tan head. Light chocolate up front with a sweet roasted coffee finish.

Very dark beer, poured with big, slightly brown head. Aromas of coffee and bitter chocolate. Very smooth to drink with roasted flavours and hints of bitterness. Pretty good.

$1.99 at Total Wine (& More) in Kennesaw, GA. Appearane: Pours a dark brown body with a small, beige-colored head. Smell: Creamy chocolate maltiness with bright, tart-smelling raisin fruitiness. Taste: The taste of chocolate-coated raisins, like a glass filled to the brim with Raisinets. Hints of tobacco and citrus on the sweetish finish. Mouthfeel: Surprisingly, I’d say its almost a medium-full body. Very creamy and smooth. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: This is actually alot better than I thought it’d be.

Aroma: Weak. Hard to distinguish anything. (Bar caused?) Appearance: Thin, non-existent head. Dark black color. Palate: thick mouthfeel, a little dry. Flavor: almost like a typical porter + anchor steam mixed together. Complex vanilla and roasted nut malt. Overall, I gave this a good score because it tasted good.

Chocolate and roasted malts, sweet with bit of vanilla though slight metallic nose. Dark brown-black with big, lacing frothy light brown head. Medium-light oily body with low-med carb. Mellow roastiness with mild coffee-like bitterness. Sweet to start followed by smooth sweet nutty after. A very nice porter.

Updated on 2008-02-02: Either the recipe has changed a bit or I’m just not as impressed as before; Downgraded my numbers to 3.8 from 4.2. Still a nice porter, but not as "wow" as I thought in the earlier days.

A very rich, sweet aroma with a full solid head. Pours a beautiful dark brown black color. Has a sweet flavor that is almost too much at times, and at a hefty price 9.99 a six-pack, will probably not be a repeat purchase. Nevertheless, it still an excellent beer.
