Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Pours a black color and is topped by a thick, creamy, paper-grocery-bag brown colored head. Sweet roasted malt, molasses, coffee, and chocolate aromas emanate from my glass. A medium level of body and a fruity sweetness marry well with the other flavors that are in the beer. Roasted notes are here but somewhat subdued, notes of chocolate, and lots of dark fruit are here as well. A very well integrated porter that I can always count on and enjoy. Early on this was one of the best porters out there, and it still can hold its own against today’s contenders for the porter crown.

Mmmmm... a nice and lovely porter with plenty of body and kick to keep you interested. Nice coffee and caramel tones make this one a good choice.

Bottle (from Bitter Virtue, BBE Jul 07). Roasty liquorice aromas and sweet malt with some hops in their too round it off. SLightly sweet with a light acidic prickle from the carbonation and a gentle bitter finish. Mouthfeel varies between thin and creamy. Quite tasty but seems undecided about what it wants to do preventing me from thinking any more of it.

Bottle (35 cl) from Systembolaget. Dark reddish brown with a medium beige head. Caramelly and roasted malt aroma with herbal hops. Medium bodied and smooth. Very well balanced with some initial sweetness, followed by a dry finish and a lingering soft bitterness.

Dark color. Dark copper color. Very different palate than most. Hop bitterness was first, then the roasted malt in the finish. Very nice all around porter.

nice chocolate sweetness and coffee ’bite’. nice thick taste. not sure if i could sip more than a couple of these at one sitting without a break for another style. definitely in my top 10 porters, though.
