Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

First taste 6/8/07. Black as night. Has a very thin dark brown head, but it sticks around the whole time with excellent lacing. Aromas are sweet roasted malts, baker’s chocolate, and a hint of licorice. Didn’t pick up the licorice in the flavor, but the malt and chocolate are accompanied by coffee with cream and mild hops. Alcohol comes through a little on the smooth finish. Wow, this is an excellent porter. It might be my favorite to date!

Dark brown almost black...smells of coffee...tastes of burnt coffee then just bitter...finishes very smooth and softly...definately a more complex porter of your widely available porters...

(355 ml bottle). Pours with a large tan head, colour is very dark, nearly black (= very, very dark ruby when held to the light). Lovely complex aroma where coffee, dark chocolate, prunes, oak and sandalwood shine through. Flavour is initially sweet and mellow, then a distinct bitterness comes through. Coffee notes are dominant. There's something undefined strange in the aftertaste that keeps me from giving it a straight "5". Still, this is a top class porter!

12oz. pours dark with tan head. nose has lots of baker’s chocolate, and hint of smoke. flavor is pretty meaty, milk chocolate, slight roast. mouthfeel is medium. carbination is a tad fizzy. decent but way to meaty for a porter.

Ok appearance. Too much "corn-flakes" in aroma. An ok porter, dark and a fine flavor. But not complex enough. And the corn-flakes.....bad.

Poured a dark black; creamy beige head. Aroma of caramel malt and chocolate; would have liked it to be stronger. I found it a little thin/light on the palate. Flavor was very complex, got better with each taste. Flavors of malt and chocolate. Caramel. Coffee and licquorice also. Above average for me, but expected more.
