Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

[12 oz. bottle] Dark brown color with a thick and creamy tan head. Light sweet, chocolate malt aroma. Smooth and sweet aroma of chocolate, some roasted malts and a nice brown sugar middle with a slightly bitter coffee finish. Very nice porter.

Statistically speaking, I am irrelevant with this, but I was surprised that I’ve never rated this old favorite. Deep mahogany color when held up to the light with an attractive creamy beige head that left sticky lace. Sweet malt nose with some faint roasted grain. Light brown sugar sweetness with some sweetened coffee and some burnt grains. Nice beer.

Bottle. Thick chocolate head over a near black, opaque body. Nutty, roasty aroma. Mainly sweetish dark malts along with some refreshing fruitiness (raisins, figs). Taste is complex and exciting; espresso, both bitter and sweet chocolate, sweet black malts, and notes of dark dried fruits. Good body, oily mouthfeel. A lingering acidic bitterness in the finish. Very nice!

I have to agree with everyone else here: this is one of the great porters. It has just a hint of chocolate, plus a great roasted malt flavor and is not overly sweet - it actually has a nice mild bitterness that seems to result from both hops and the burnt flavors (roasted malts).
