Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Is there a theme going on here? Maybe the best porter made in the USA, but them more research is required. Reminds me very much of Sam’s Imperial with its port flavors. Great coffee dryness, teasing chocolate aroma. Anchor Steam made this brewery famous, but this beer is better.

Poured a relatively thin brown with reddish hues. Nice head, thick brown and creamy. The aroma was sweet, some caramel, rich. The flavor was a little thin, definite caramel, sweetness, not too bad but definitely mass produced. As I’ve been saying, a bit thin and body and palate. Overall, enjoyable but not worth the money. Thank goodness it was on sale.

I can’t believe I have never rated this beer, since it is one of my favorite porters. It pours opaque brown with a very nice fluffy tan head and an enticing chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a hearty roasted malt flavor some carbonation, a bit of chocolate and a lot of dark molasses. This is a real porter.

Poured from the bottle, a deep brown colour with a large rocky beige head. A rich warming chocolate malt aroma with a burnish tinge. Rich and chocolately to taste with a vinuous and roasted malt finish. Left with a velvety smoothness in my mouth - yum.

Pours black, with a big, thick, foamy light brown head. Smells of roast, dark fruits, a little chocolate. A little bit on the mild side. Nice and thick on the pa;ate, big roasty taste, some chocolate, and a touch of some dark fruits that I get up front. The finish is slightly sweet with a nuttiness to it. Really nice drinking porter. Good body to this brew. Quite enjoyable.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of hazelnuts, caramel malts, biscuity malts, some roasted coffee malts. Taste is of hazelnut, caramel malts, typical chalky burnt coffee finish. Light bodied, moderate carbonation. Very good porter.

Bottled. Looks and pours like a Guinness, just with a slightly foamier head. Smells and tastes wonderful, like a whiff of Hershey bar hiding a more subtle sloe gin cherry. The texture is a little bit grainy, yet also mellow. Not a harsh note to be found. This is indeed one of the world’s great porters.
