Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottled. Looks and pours like a Guinness, just with a slightly foamier head. Smells and tastes wonderful, like a whiff of Hershey bar hiding a more subtle sloe gin cherry. The texture is a little bit grainy, yet also mellow. Not a harsh note to be found. This is indeed one of the world’s great porters.

12 oz bottle. 6N1. Fig and warm brandy aroma. Bourbon cask and tangy roast malt. Restrained. Pours a dark, dark mahogany, with a big finger of fluffy cocoa-tinted soap above. Flavor is a lightly watery, yet nuanced milk chocolate, hazelnut paste, and almond butter, with a curt corner of cafe au lait, turbinado, and creamed soup. Some estery, fruity yeast character in good fashion, tinted with some buttery alcohol character. Finishes dry, clean and calmly with a sweet nip of chocolate mint. Fine beer.

Aaah a delicious porter. I love the mouthfeel of porters in relation to stouts. You get most of the flavor without the extreme thickness. Aroma of malt. Pour was a deep dark brown with a thin off white ring for a head. Taste was delicious and full....dark coffee, chocolate and a bitterness in the aftertaste. Great!

Pours black with a tannish head and nice lacing. Nose is of roast malts and some chocolates, small fruit. Flavor has roast malts with some coffee. Creamy finish. Nice porter.

Pours a deep dark black. No light gets through it. No real head or aroma. Flavor is a musty, roasted carmel. There is the usual chocolate and coffee flavors here which stand out quite strong. Very good and excellent lacing.

Bottle. Huge, creamy and lasting head with crusty lacing on top of an opaque black body. Aroma is marshmallows, twangy butterscotch apple, slight peppery hop and coffee, faint alcohol. Flavor is the same combination, with less twangy apple and butterscotch. Thick and sweetish, with a medium-heavy body. This beer could pass for a foreign stout.

Sweet maltiness, perhaps a touch too sweet, but not cloying. I think the mouthfeel seems a touch thin. But I do like this very much, VERY drinkable, just not in the mood to jump on the near-unanimous bandwagon.

Bottle. Poured dark, dark brown with a generous tan head that lingered well and left nice lacing. Rich aroma, chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and floral hops. Dark roasted malt flavors, coffee and nice bitterness from the hops giving a lingering spicy, bitter finish. Thick body, creamy carbonation. Very nice brew from Anchor!
