Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Nice frothy tan head which is nice and creamy on top. Great aroma with roasted malts, molasses, chocolate and even a bit of dough. Color is a deep, dark brown. Flavor is soft and rich with delicious roasted malts, a touch of caramel, some dark chocolate and a hint of hops. Finish is a littel dry but creamy and smooth. A very good porter.

I’ve had this beer many times over the past few years, but never rated it. This is the defining beer for many a young person, I think. First off, I think it is very true to style; a bit thin, fair to great carbonation with a thin lasting head, quite dark (rubyish with intense light) in the glass. Chocolate malt sweet/nut aroma and flavor, dark malt roasted coffee and bitterness, some (although not a lot) hop bitternes in the close. All in all, an exceptional package. The only beer I know so closely that I waited this long to rate. And, this will be one of several beers of honor at my birthday party the 28th; the hostess (a professor colleague) loves it, we’ve got this year’s seniors travelling back into town to celebrate, and students of mine over the past two years will be coming from far flung places such as Boston and Providence. I’m a lucky man.

22oz bottle, dark brown color, with a thick creamy tan-colored head, mild toasted, biscuity, roasted, chocolate malt nose, with a light mochaish, cookie dough, brown chocolatey accent, with some licorice, molasses, cocoa notes and with a faint dark dried fruity, raisiny, pruney, figgy aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice mild toasted, roasted, chocolate malt, faint mochaish character with some molasses, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee bean, burnt toast flavours, with a light cookie dough, toffee, brown sugar accent, leading towards a molasses, dark chocolatey, roasty bitterness finish.

Bottle. Almost black, small thin off white head that went away quick. Nose is exactly what you want out of a beer: crisp, clean, thick. Tastes is very sharp and crisp. Notes of licorice, roasted hops, bitter chocolate and coffee. All the fore mentioned tastes are very low key and not at all overpowering. The beauty is that these flavors are all there but they blend together perfect. This is a very compplex well crafted beer. This is almost the most perfectly crafted beer I have ever had. It is commplex in its subtlety. I could write poetry and prose about this beer for days. If I was forced to write one negative thing about this beer it would be the slightly thick mouthfeel, but that is very, very minor.

Pours coffee dark into a shaker with long-lasting, micro-bubble mocha colored head. Coffee, caramel, date and plum notes. Very light and thin but with a slightly fizzy carbonation. Rich roasted chocolate finish that lingers.

Almost black with a tan foamy head that held on well. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Rich, full flavor of coffee and chocolate and a touch of anise. A delicious drink. Excellent.
