Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Thin 0.5cm head is foamy, tan, never leaving. Body is dark brown, almost opaque. Aroma is typically porterish with direct barley flavors and a small lactic bite. Rich chocolate and anise flavors. Nice range of fruitiness reminiscent of a dates cake with lots of crust. Palate is thick, oily, sweet. Not much bitterness at all despite a gentle hop hint and apparent faint smokiness. I can understand its high rating, this is everything you want a porter to be. Classy and quaffable.

Aroma of smoked nuts and roast malt. The taste is sweetish malts and smokey bacon like goodness. An excellent porter probably the best iv ever had. Great stuff. Re-rate one dimentional thin porter.

This beer rocks. The nose is of burnt malt, molasses and dark chocolate. The color is dark red/crimson when held up to the light. The frothy, light brown head is mostly lasting with good lacing. I really love the flavors in this beer. Very complex. Lightly bitter and acidic. Also just a touch sour and salty on the back end. The mouthfeel is full and creamy with soft carbonation. The beer finishes very dry on the palate. Excellent porter.

Thick black and viscous. There are tons of coffee and chocolate notes in the aroma. Very robust, yet smooth with a general roasted coffee flavor throughout. Plenty of sweet malt upon first sip and a nice balance of bittering hops. The finish is slighty dry and flavorful leaving you thirsting for more.

dark black colour with a thin and compact head, nice lacing, aroma of dark chocolate, licorice and alcohol, oily, thick, dry malty chocolate finish with a long lasting but somehow rough bitterness

Very hoppy on the nose especially for a porter, with some nice roasty malt in the aroma aswell. Slight sweet start, and then leeds in to a roasty malty middle and hoppy finish. I liked it OK, but i thought the hops didn’t quite blend with the malt and the texture didn’t quite click either (almost milky with a hoppy, malty bite) IMHO.

Thick, creamy, nearly putty brownish head, slightly irregular and leaving lacerings over ebony beer. Very chocolatey nose, as a creamy chocolate sauce for desserts; hints of tobacco, very lightly smoked and faraway C-hops. Powerful and delicate at the same time, balanced. Dry, smokey flavour with more tobacco and even ashes than the chocolate from the nose. Again just this suspicion of noble USA-hops. Gradually filling in with a discreet acidity from roasted barly and smoked grains, and the essence of unsweetened cappucino. Again wonderful balance. Not rich as a stout, but dry enough, and velvety. Again: excellent balance. Long lingering coffeeish-tobacco aftertaste. Very good porter. America’s oldest surviving craftbrewer has lost nothing of its aim for perfection.

Almost pitch black body with a small dense head. Lots of roasted malts in the aroma, with some bitterness from chocolate. Nice flavor with with a light roasted taste and some chocolate. Dry bitter finish.
