Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Very nice colour. Almost black, with a light brown creamy head. Aroma of coffee and alcahol and hints of chocolate and spices. The flavour is roasted and have notes of coffee, chocolate, burned almonds and spices. Complex and challenging. Has an excellent aftertaste of bitter chocolate, and in the dying stages i have some apple notes. This is a great porter.

(bottle, with thanks to bierkoning) Almost black coloured hue with a mid-sized tanned foam, leaving some lace. Moderately sweet aroma of dark and slightly roasted malt with toffee and chocolate. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium body, smooth carbonation. Strong toast-malty taste with toffee and chocolate; medium-dry, bitter-roasty finish with notes of coffee and hints of hops.

This pours dark brown, almost black, and has a foamy brown head. It smells malty sweet with an added chocolate aroma. Creamy mouthfeel. It’s very sweet to the taste, but not cloyingly so. There’s plenty of roasted malts, a hint of chocolate, and a touch of licorice. Has a mild, sweet malt finsh.

Dark brown to near black color with a tall tan head that leaves rings as you partake. Mildly sweet mocha and grainy aroma. Creamy feel with a light carbonation tingle. Light bittersweet flavors. Mild malt acidity in the finish. A porter that you could chew on all night, I might!

Roasted chocolate/coffee aroma. Black, large light brown creamy head, perfect lacing. Sweet, coffee, malt flavors. Finish is roasted, bitter and long. I love this beer!

Deep black color with ruby edges where the light passes through. Large head, good lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, smoke, fruit and floral hops. Flavor is not overly complex, I look for more in a porter, almost a burnt carmel aftertaste. Palate was terrible, extremely acidic and musky. Bad finish and mouthfeel, almost stout like.

Bottled (355ml). There seems to be some debate about whether this is a porter (a bit rich for that) or a stout (a bit light bodied for that?). What the hell, let's just call it an excellent beer. Black with a hint of ruby. Almost opaque. Malty with sourish hoppy notes on the nose. Pontefract cake (licorice) and bitter chocolate too, which carries through on to the palate. Quite rich, but not heavy bodied. Bitter chocolate (again) and espresso coffee on the finish. No hint of sweetness. Spiffing stuff.

Bottle. Poured black with medium tan head. Aroma was full with malt, hops and sweet. Flavor was full bodied with same tones as aroma and smooth rich texture. The finish was not as full as other porters.
