Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Bottle. White short head. Black body. Barley liqorice aroma. Flavor of bitter English liqorice. A lot more bitterness than expected and also astonishing level of carbon dioxide.

Picked up a single bottle from Cellars Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours an opaque dark brown, nearly black, brew with a thick large bubbly creamy tan head. Good lacing. Aromas of cocoa, coffee, black licorice, toasted malt, and plum. Taste is full body, lightly carbonated, creamy and smooth, with taste character of sweet licorice. Finish is smooth and a nice flowery hop aftertaste. Nicely done!

Bottled. Poured a clear, garnet-tinted brown with a creamy cap of deep beige head. The aroma picked up deeply-roasted baker’s chocolate, some woodsy notes, and was incredibly sweet.. I’m talkin’ much sweeter than excpected.. toasted black malts and mild smoke emerge toward the back. Flavor was again driven by powerful sweetness.. roasted baker’s chocolate and cocoa again at the core.. tasty chocolates.. moderate herbal and woody bitter accents.. left an almost burnt cocoa impression at the finish. Medium-bodied, well-carbonated, and sweeeeet on the palate. Tasty stuff, but more roast and less sweet would have made it better.

Poured a very dark brown with a reddish tint when held to light. Thin tan head. Aroma was lightly roasted with a touch of piney hops. Flavors of roasted malt (but not as roasty as some other brands tried this tasting) fruity and mildly hoppy. Medium bodied with a clean smooth finish.

Mocha bittersweet rather than chocolate and still rich, not too toasty coffee. Just easy and smooth. Roast, anise nice at end of meal, carbonation on tongue as it sooths it

Bottle (650ml). Pours almost black, incredibly lively with a big light brown foamy-creamy head. Does the "guiness pour" settle-out thing wonderfully - head lasts forever, rocks out and leaves a half-decent lacing - top marks. Aroma is roast malt, somewhat vinous, stewed prunes and apple cores, slight hops, and tasty coffee and bittersweet chocolate notes as well - quite darkly fruit sweet on the nose. Flavour is like heaven’s own semisweet belgian chocolate with nuts and raisins bar - with dark roast malt, sourish wine overtones, other steeped fruits, coffee and cream. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, only lightly carbonated. This is one of the nicest porters I’ve ever had. Terrific blend of bitterness (coffee, chocolate, touch of hops), sweetness (fruit, malt and chocolate) with enough tartness to keep it all together.

Botlle.Poured dark brown with smallish fine top. Quality quality nose, medium dark roast, brown sugar and nuts, dried fruits as well. Good medium bitter roasted character stretched along the way. Light hoppy top and acidic below just adds to character. Reminds me of the old school Baltic Porters just this one is smaller brother. Very nice.

Deep black color, large thick creamy head. Roasted malt aroma. Deep rich roasted malts and flavor. Coffee and chocolate flavor. Slightly sweet. Good hop to malt balance. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth and slightly hoppy. Aftertaste is slightly bitter, with a very slight metallic tinge. Nice tasting porter, smooth and very drinkable.
