Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

I’m also a big fan of Porters. To me this is one of the best domestic Porters made. Its overall presentation is is fairly aggressive and well balanced with a rich chocolate malt nose and flavor. Creamy mouthfeel with thick long-lasting head. Has somewhat of a port wine taste in the background similar to Sam Smith’s Taddy Porter. Good stuff!

Very dark, medium tan head. Aroma was nice: hints of chocolate coffee, but not overly so. Great flavor. I’m beginning to really enjoy porters more and more with every one I have.

Normally, the description printed on a beer’s label isn’t worth the ink that was used to print it. Well, Anchor has delivered: ’The deep black color, the thick creamy head and the intensely rich flavor...have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality.’ They hit the nail on the head. Opaque with a thick, creamy, tan head and delicious malt and chocolate flavor. Heavy and smooth like a stout, with a bitter, rich chocolate aftertaste hinting at yeast, which reminds me this is a porter and not a stout. Excellent.

Almost completly black, head was short lived which suprised me. Nice chocolate malt nose, maybe a hint of coffee. Taste is pretty much the same. Starts off with smooth black and chocolate malt, full bodied. Finishes with some hop bitterness and some roasty notes. Damn smooth all the way through...the best porter I have tried.

Ohhhhhhhh. Doesn"t get much better than this. Possibly even better than Fullers Porter. I need to taste each side by side to decide. Perfect combination of bitterness (very little) and sweetness (plenty, but not too much). Licorice, toffee, coffee, maple syrup. Many flavors. Pours with thick, quickly diminishing light brown head. Black in appearance. Silky smooth with medium body (Fullers may be a bit heavier and silkier??).

Very dark brown body, very little light gets through. Head is tall and tan, but fades pretty quickly. Laced the mug nicely. Smells a little sweet, a little alcoholish. Taste is great. Good balance of malt and hops. A little coffee, a little less chocoloate. Burnt and tasty all the way through. Another great beer from a great brewery.
