Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

A deep brown color with a creamy tan head and sticky lacing. The head retention is low, but maintains a decent layer. Smells of malt, caramel roasted grains and coffee, with is a surprising presence of fruitiness. Flavor has a rich sweet start and a roasty hop finish. Palate is medium to full bodied, creamy and effervescent with a full lasting bite at the end. Anchor Porter maintains characteristics of a higher gravity beer with a good balance, and more chutzpa than many others of the style without going extreme.

Pours a rich, dark brown-black...with a frothy, thick head. Smells of stout coffee topped off with chocolate. Body is full and hearty, but very creamy. Just enough sweetness to make it feel like dessert, but not enough to be overpowering. Great coffee flavors mixed with molasses...good bitterness. The is a fantastic porter from a great brewery.

Bottle. Pours a black with a reddish tint, a tan fluffy head. Smells of cofee and sour fruit, and very bitter chocolate. Tastes of bitter chocoalte, mocha, ripe fruit like raisins and prunes, with a very full chocolate flavor at the end. It feels extremely creamy and smooth on the tongue with very few bubbles. Slightly bitter finish, but not overly so. A wonderful beer that makes me very happy to be across the bay!

This to me is the quintessential American porter. Big chocalate malts with some dark fruit, Mocha and toffee. Absolutely no malt astringency, Clean as a whistle mouthfeel very velvety and round. Great beginning, middle and end. smooth as glass finish. Very pleasing.

Bottle. Strong dark chocolate and some roast in a scrumptious nose, lots of malt. On the browner side of barely-translucent red, dark with a creamy, rocky light brown head. Really a superb head, spoonable and worthy of a dozen pictures. Lots of chocolate and light roast in the mouth, medium-light body (somewhat watery) with a dry, woody, toffee-and-roast aftertaste. Dark chocolate note is lasting and is always lurking somewhere. Tons of malt, light bitterness with a touch of terminal hoppiness. Rich for a porter, but not overly so. Touch of acidity and slightly less mocha. Balanced and smooth. Rather robust but with concomitant complexity. I don’t feel the slightest bit of regret about slapping down a high score - this is a true classic!

Pours midnight black with a medium sized tan head that lingers. Aroma is of chocolate and coffee along with roasted malt and some caramel. A truely delicious aroma for sure. Flavor is chocolate and roasted malt along with coffee and a hint of smokiness. It finishes off with some bitterness but a near perfect amount of it that leaves you wanting more. A truely delicious porter.

12oz bottle. Aroma is fantastic, notes of dark malt, chocolate, smoke, and a little hops. Large tan rocky head the lasts and leaves great lace. Dark brown/black body. Flavor is dark malt, smoke and typical porter ale character. Palate is light and watery with a soft carbonation. A very good porter and if I were a fan of the style it would be one of my favorites.
