Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Flavorful and dark. Taste rich and creamy...smooth is a good word. Definatley taste the barley, which I enjoy. Not bad for an almost commercial brew.

This truly is an exceptional beer. Beautiful color, and an impressive head to match. Aroma is of toffee/coffee, and the flavor profile is a pleasant, heightened extension of that. Anchor Brewing can, and should, be very proud of this one.

I really like this beer. Nice deep dark color, smooth feel and great taste. Nice overtones of chocolate taste and roasted malts.

12oz bottle from Degarth. Dark brown pour with only very slight hints at some red throughout. Creamy, bubbly dark tan head that is mostly lasting, and leaves a thick layer of foam. Spotty drip lacing. Dark vinous fruits, raisins, figs, tobacco, chocolate and molasses. Also get a sense of boozy soaked fruit bread or something similar. Also a bit of a sour twang, presumably from the hops. My only complaint is I wish the aroma was a little more up front, but that’s a small nitpick. Tons of roasted and charred malts on the fore, then segueing into sweet malts and chocolate, and a healthy dose of molasses. Sugary sweetness at the very end of the swallow, along with some ripe dark fruits. Very smooth, lightly creamy mouthfeel. Medium astringency, but very easily drinkable. Finish is in turns roasty, lightly bitter, sweet and slightly tart. Phenomenal, and the first thing Degarth ever told me the truth about.

(bottle)poured into a pint. I am a huge porter fan and this one is one of the tops. A dark porter that pours a thick frothy head( 1 inch in my pint) to the rim that sticks and does not dissipate. Has a light creamy/nutty nose. Very smooth on the palate, not too bitter, and a little creamy. It has a medium finish. This is a great porter.

A little background on your boy....I’m not a Pale Ale only kinda guy...I love Porters and Stouts as well...it’s just that I steer away from them during the Summer...but there I was again in BEVERAGE WORLD (which is always a struggle because there’s so much to choose from)...and I finally decided to try the Anchor Porter here...good for ME, because as it turns out, this Beer is DELICIOUS. Best Porter I’ve had thus far...beautiful.

Rated 1/27/07: Was able to stumble upon this at a local store, haven’t seen it anywhere else. So glad I picked some up because this is one helluva porter. Black pour, nice brown head and decent lacing. Bitter-sweet scent, nice roasted malt nose. Incredibly thick and smooth, outstanding on the palate to say the least. Lots of roasted malt with plenty of chocolate and mild coffee flavors mixed with just the right amount of hops. This is a beautiful beer.

Pours a dark brown with reddish tint and a caramel head. Smells just like hersheys dark chocolate. Just like it! No joke! The dark chocoalte flavor appears in the taste along with a hint of roast. It finishes smooth and dry. Loved this one. Go buy it......now!
