Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old-fashioned Porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple, natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick, creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter, made in San Francisco since 1974, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect.

Really a class act here. Poured with a nice full, textured, foamy, frothy, light tan head and lace. Very dark brown, almost opaque with highlights of dark copper red. Nice rich malty roasty coffee toffee chocolate nose. More roastiness in flavor. A bit thin body, but creamy. And the flavor is really good. Definitely a session beer. NIce balanced finish. Having this at Bodega Brew Pub downtown La Crosse. Occasionaly they have it on draft too.

Wow. Everything you could want in a porter: pitch black with a dark, frothy head; aroma of roasted coffee; flavor of dark chocolate, coffee, and bread crust. Perfect ammount of carbonation that went down incredibly smooth - the single best mouthfeel I’ve experienced. I’ve had a few highly-regarded porters in my day but this is the best all-around porter I’ve ever tasted.

Anchor porter is one of the definitive examples of robust porter. The head is thick and creamy, as is the texture. There is no roasted barley character, and no bite from over use of black patent. The hops are present, but not overpowering. This is exactly what I expect when I order a porter.

This is a great beer. Great strawberry aroma with a smooth head and a chocolatey/coffee aftertaste that lasts just long enough to make its point. I love this beer, and anything Anchor makes.

Color is a beautiful opaque deep brown, tan head is fine-bubbled. Aroma is decidedly porter-ish with strong coffee hint. Rich porter flavor has strong chocolate overtone and smoky and hoppy components. Finish is bitter and zingy. Delicious!

I have enjoyed this porter fresh many times at the Mariposa Street Brewery of Mr. Maytag. It loses little in the bottle if it travels well. A very creamy, sweet toasted mocha mouth filling treat. This is a substantial food! Sip it cool, not cold, enjoy its lacing as the glass is drained. It goes so well with roast beef and Yorkshire pudding! It is good as well with chocolate cake!

Satisfyingly rich, complex porter. Firm, creamy body with chocolate and fruit (subtle banana character) in the aroma and flavor; nice bitter hop/sweet malt balance mid-palate; mild alcohol warmth in the finish followed by a host of flavors in the aftertaste: coffee, molasses, yeasty dark bread, and a pleasant hop bitterness.
