Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

(bottle). Clear golden/amber color. Medium white head, which is mostly diminishing. Grainy aroma and flavor. Long duration. Dry finish. Thin texture. Heavy carbonation. Fair lacing.

Pours deep gold with note of malts on the nose. The mild notes of malt in the palate drive to a nice dry finish. Easy to drink and quite enjoyable.

Bright darkish yellow color. Lots of uprising carbonation. Nice, lasting white and foamy head. Looks clear and thirst-quenching. Smell of a nice, all-malt lager. Mild barley malt. Pleasant. A little mild (nice) corn syrup sweetness. Nice typically light all-malt lager flavor. Malt slightly pale. Very typical. Decent but doesn’t stand out. A tad fizzy; the texture of a Belgian but none of the spicy bite. Drinkable but average. Not bad. Really just a normal lager.

Clear gold with a soapy head - a dry, bitter session ale, with some bready malt to keep it from being overly so - crackery, flinty, lightly earthy, with a bit of toasted malt character - I’m a big fan of super dry beers, so I’m actually quite a fan of this, even if there isn’t very much going on - I’d pick other bitters or milds over this one, but I wouldn’t mind downing a few pints of it.

[9/11/08] Draught at Beer Temple in Amsterdam. Golden color. Aroma of slightly grainy malt and some citric hoppy hints. Sweetish malty flavor, finishes bitter and hoppy. Light-medium body.

Bottle from Phaleslu- Thanks again Peter. Pours a golden urine hue with a small white head. Notes of herbs, grass, hay, pepperoini pizza, dirt, earth, some light skunkiness. Weird. Crisp dry finish. Not Anchor’s best offering.

22 oz. bottle from Ludlow Wines. Pours a nice slightly cloudy amber with a thick, rocky white head. Aroma of malt, bread, hops, with a little citrus and sugar. Flavor of malt, hops, citrus, bread, and metallic notes. Some soapiness or another hard-to-pinpoint chemical seems to be at play here, and along with the metallic notes, give this an odd mouthfeel and flavor. Light-to-medium bodied, active carbonation, and bitter.

05/17/09. 22 oz in shaped pint glass. Clear amber with a thin, lasting off-white head that leaves some lacing. Medium carbonation with large bubbles. Biscuit aroma with some malt sweetness. Watery but fizzy mouthfeel. Flavors of malt, sourdough, and some citrus. Crisp finish with lingering bitter aftertaste. Some complain of a metallic flavor, which I got, but I didn’t find it unpleasant. Plenty of oomph for 3.3%. I’d love to try this alongside its larger brother (Old Foghorn) to see if any similarity can be detected.
