Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

light yellow gold body with a lasting white head. sheetrock nose, it smells a lot like coos to be honest. metallic unpleasant grain taste. i know it’s an ale, but it tastes like a lot of cheap pale lagers. bitterness dominates. slightly floral majorly unpleasant. i’ve been waiting to try this for a while, now i never need to again. 3 3 2 2 6

Pours a fizzy golden brown with a small white head. Aroma of malt, corn, caramel and hops. Flavor is weak corn, malt and watery but given that this is second runnings of anchor old foghorn you would expect that. That said, this is a good sessionable beer and deserves a try.

clear gold, tall fluffy white head held its shape over the rim of the glass proudly. sweet aroma like euro lagers, notes of sweet corn. body is light and clean, flavor is too far to the astringent side of bitter. still, good as a bitter since most bitters i’ve had are lacking in that aspect, but i prefer more character to the hop profile. as i continued to drink it my opinion warmed. this would be a nice session or summer beer.

pours amber with lots of carbonation, a dense two finger head sits on top. smells is light caramel and fruit. thin and lightly flavored, a bit of caramel with a good deal of hops in the finish (for the style). the head sticks around forever. nothing too exciting but i am glad that I got to sample a bit of this "history lesson".

Pours clear with a light tan color. Thin lacey head. Flavor is somewhat weak but I think thats the intent of the beer. Has a smooth taste.

Apperance: Pours a clear, light coppery body with a foamy, white head. Smell: Doughy barley aroma with a bit of citrus and spice. Starts smelling of broth after awhile, so much so that I order some Chinese delivery! Taste: Mild malt character, with only some light malted barley and a taste of yeasty dough sweetened with one lonely drop of honey. Spicy, citrusy hop flavor with a medium bitterness. Dry finish is a touch soapy with a lingering bitterness. There’s an astringency that builds up on the palate along the way. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium, somewhat lively carbonation. Drinkability: You won’t get anything that packs a punch at 3.30%, but it sure has alot of heart, that’s for damn sure.

It been quite a few years, these notes are quite old. I had always been curious to try this because I have been in past years a big fan of the Old Foghorn. Not what I expected, but then I really had no idea what to expect from this ripassa style beer making. Extremely light, but quite on the malty side, a tad bit of sweetness, biscuity, with some caramel toppings and just a hint of citrus from the hops. I found this to be quite a fun little alternative.
