Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Definitely not a great beer, but MUCH better than the reviews. I’m surprised how low the reviews are frankly. It’s nice and bitter, and, obviously a good session beer since the alcohol is so low. I’m not sure why this is labeled small beer though.

Very pale copper, surprisingly white head. Doughy, bready aroma with hints of caramel and some fresh herbal hoppiness. Toasty cracker malts in the flavor, more light caramel, finishing cleanly with an assertive bitterness, lightly tangy. Carbonation is a bit overdone. I like it, and enjoy historical aspect and the fact that they were able to get more beer out of the grain. The flavor is light and faint but actually quite nuanced. Cutting down the carbonation could actually make this into a pretty nice low alc beer.

Pours a clear tan with very little head. What is there is just white head. Aroma is definitely funky malts and grass. Flavor is malt and yeast primarily with hints of hops. Nothing great stands out. Bleh. Not impressed.

Funky aroma of wet straw and malt. The most striking thing about this beer when it hits the palate is its dryness. It is also malty, grass and straw flavors, lingering hop bitterness, slightly tinny.

I suspect that this beer is ranked low not because of lack of flavor, particularly compared to other bitters, but rather because of the fact that it’s alcohol by volume comes to a lowly 3.3%. You’re not drinking Old Foghorn here! I am actually interested in finding low alcohol beers that are full of flavor for those moments when I have no desire to get sloshed & this one fits that role well. Technical: Pours a sparkling , straw-like golden with a giant head. Smells strongly of lemon blossoms & sweet toffee. Flavor less pronounced at first, quite dry, with lots of grassy, long-lasting hops bitterness. Some sharp citric acidity. Malts not very apparent.

Pours copper with a nice white head. Slightly bread/funk aroma with a bit of yeast. Flavor isn’t as funky, really really light flavored all around. I can pick up a bit of yeast, malt, and a bit of floral hops, but that’s a stretch. Finishes a bit watery but if it was any heavier it would be weird. Interesting beer.

Gusher, but pour gets me stoked. It looks great. Golden, nice head, streaming bubbles. Smells like nothing, then maybe some yeast. Tastes like metal, then sour. Terrible. I let it sit an hour (don’t want to drink). Try again at RT. Much nicer this time. Biscuit and yeast replace sour and metal. No hop presence. Watery, watery, foamy. Not so good. I can’t think of a time I would want to drink this ass water.

This beer’s not as bad as its made out to be. Low alcohol, yes. Bad, no. Pours an orangish honey color with a pretty thin haed that dissipates quickly to just a ring around the edge of the brew. Faint malt smells, a little metallic. Tastes light and malty. Not huge flavor by any stretch, but malty and tasty nonetheless. Thin, dry mouthfeel, with crisp carbonation. Very drinkable, light tasty beer.
