Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

22oz bottle. Light bready aroma. Lots of bread crust and a hint of grassy hops. Pours bright clear copper with a sustained white head leaving surprising lacing. Flavor is quite dry with emphasis on bread crust. Some grassy bitter and metallic hops. Fairly light bodied finishing rather metallic and astringent.

Bottle. Golden pour, thin head that dissipated quickly. Aroma of czech malt and dishwater. Reminds me a bit of anchor steam, with the somewhat off-tasting yeast and bland malt.

Pours pale orange with small halo of a head. Nose is malty and a touch of yeast. Flavor is bitter with not much after that. No complexity or flavor beside the bitterness.

Golden pour with white foamy head that diminishes into a halo of lace. Spice and slight citrus on the nose. Bread and spice come to mind during the initial taste. A bit thin on the mouthfeel. Slight hop flavors also present. Bitterness is ever present and builds at the finish. Nice session beer.

Picked up single 22-oz bomber at Bottleworks in Seattle, WA. Pours a light golden amber brew with a fast dissolving white head that nearly dissipates clean. Aroma of light fruity caramel multi-grain malt, a touch of dry hops and some roasted nuts. Taste is light to medium bodied, lightly carbonated with flavors of light caramel malt, some orange/citrus zest, and even a touch of yeast. Finish has a slight sourdough flavor with a mild bitterness. Interesting brew.

Smells like a toilet...couldn’t get past this. Little appreciable flavor or anything else. Ugh!

Bottle: Orange-tinged golden brew, lightly active, with a thin top. The aroma is sweet and almost fruity. It drinks with a stark acerbic sting right up front, not unlike your first sting when you bite into an orange rind to start peeling it. This mellows as you go, but it provides a barrier between this beer being a standard ol’ golden lager or ale and what it is, which is a very cool nice style made by a newly historic brewer. Miscategorized here as a bitter, I suppose because that’s the closest they can do, but this is a neat examplar. (#3227, 11/30/2007)
