Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Bottled. Poured clear brighter golden with a medium cap of creamy white head. The aroma picked up sweet bready notes and honey along with citrus and floral accents.. sweeter and fruitier as it approached room temp. The flavor found caramel, honey, and doughy bread with a moderate, but lingering citrus bitterness beyond the finish.. light musty vegetal notes detract a bit, otherwise tasty. Lighter-bodied and sweet with decent balance.. the bitterness was a touch abrasive at times.

22oz. Bottle: Smells of malt and mash. Poured copper in color with a tiny off-white head that diminished immediately. Flavor is medium bitter. Tastes of malt, sourdough, salt, a tiny bit of caramel. Light to medium body. Tingly texture. Lively carbonation. Bitter finish.

Very unappealing. I may drink another if I finished mowing my lawn and nothing else was available.

A pretty easy beer to drink. A little malty with some hoppiness on the finish. Not a lot of body but it’s not too bad.

The shadow of an ale, this beer went really well with a homemade philly cheese steak. I guess one could drink a couple of these due to its low alcohol and body.

Had in march of 1999. Color is a deep bright gold, with good carbonation and a thin head of big bubbles. Aroma is a light malt scent. Taste crisp and refreshing with a nice bitterness. It starts with a nice medium body that goes down crisp with a mild malt flavor. This maltiness is followed by an even hardy bitter finish.

Purchased at Corti Brothers in Sacramento, CA. Lightly grainy, light metallic aroma. A bit spicy and peppery, too. Transparent golden-copper body with a small, quickly dissipating, off-yellow head. Rather carbonated, spritzy, peppery, metallic hop flavors to start. A little grainy and roasted in the middle. Again, finishes with quite a bit of carbonation. This is ok, but I don’t like the idea of paying top dollar for the second runnings of a beer.
