Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Bottle. Poured a medium and clear amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Husky aromas with some earthiness and caramel. Tastes of caramel, grainy, and a trace of citrus. Thin body.

Bottle. Mild aroma of fruit and bittering hops with some light malt. Golden body with a foamy, fizzy off-white head. Leaves legs but not lace. Thin and bitter, malt with some stale mash and astringent hopping. Aftertaste is a little grainy, but definitely weak. With the low abv, you could drink a lot of this, but why would you want to?

22 oz bottle. Second runnings of Anchor’s Old Foghorn (barley wine) mash, makes this a "small" beer. Not too many commercial examples of small beer exist, so it really is nice to get a sample of this one. This beer pours to a deep golden to light amber color, with a soapy white head, and a moderate carbonation. The nose on this beer is grainy with light aromas of malt and some light citrus hops. Palate is lean, with some good light pale malt flavor, light flavors of estery fruit, and hints of earthy yeast. This beer finishes with more light malt and light fruity flavor up front, then ends with a mild citrus hop bite. Very refreshing, very drinkable, low alcohol beer that you could pound with impunity. A nice beer to enjoy on a hot day, and food friendly beer as well.

OH GOD! A beer with low alcohol and light on the hops! Better rate it low! The beer pours a rich, clear amber with a medium stark white bubbly head. I had very nice lacing left on the glass. Aromas are strongly malts. Whole grain bread, apple-fruity.There are some traces of hop aroma, but every time I think I latch on it slips away. Tease. Light on the palate, but full of flavor, this beer brings a mix of the malt grain flavor with some bittering. However, I think more of the brightness comes from the carbonation, which gives that little prickle. The beer has a pretty long finish, as well. I would drink this beer any day and enjoy it as much.

22 oz bottle. Pours a light amber color with a thick frothy head. Pouring also kicks up a nice noble hop smell, followed by some light amber malts. Taste is pretty nice. Low malt levels, as expected, toasty with a bit of a dry finish. Hops are a bit sharp and spicy, close to a German lager profile with an English subtext. Nice to find a "light" beer that realizes that more hops don’t add calories or alcohol. A fine session beer.

500ml bottle. Filtered and golden hued. Lively in the glass. Layer of white head. Grainy malt aroma with a touch of spicy peppery hops. Light bodied with a sweet initial malt flavor. Sticky malts. Bitter spicy hop finish. Small beer, big flavor. Nice light malt character.

Is this really an Anchor? Color is gold, almost neon gold, not much aroma. Taste is dangerously close to a 40, sour, grainy, mouthfeel is a little too thick for this caliber of beer.

Bottled. Beer is clear, light brown. Head is initially small, white, frothy. Diminishes quickly and mostly.
The aroma is unfortunately husky and dull. It’s malty with moderate notes of very husky toasted grain, moderate notes of cereal/dog chow; Hoppy with light notes of flowers, resin; Yeasty with a light note of dough; Odd blend of alcohol note and floral hop creates a hairspray-like tone.
The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, lightly-to-moderately acidic with a short, husky, trace bitter finish.
The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.
