Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

500ml bottle. Filtered and golden hued. Lively in the glass. Layer of white head. Grainy malt aroma with a touch of spicy peppery hops. Light bodied with a sweet initial malt flavor. Sticky malts. Bitter spicy hop finish. Small beer, big flavor. Nice light malt character.

Is this really an Anchor? Color is gold, almost neon gold, not much aroma. Taste is dangerously close to a 40, sour, grainy, mouthfeel is a little too thick for this caliber of beer.

Bottled. Beer is clear, light brown. Head is initially small, white, frothy. Diminishes quickly and mostly.
The aroma is unfortunately husky and dull. It’s malty with moderate notes of very husky toasted grain, moderate notes of cereal/dog chow; Hoppy with light notes of flowers, resin; Yeasty with a light note of dough; Odd blend of alcohol note and floral hop creates a hairspray-like tone.
The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly bitter, lightly-to-moderately acidic with a short, husky, trace bitter finish.
The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.

Bottle. Clear orange color with bubbly off white head that reduced quickly into a lasting foamy top. Aroma is of light malty caramel and cereal grain with skunky/grassy hops. Dry on the tongue. Tastes of skunky hops, hay, and light grain. Mild hop bitterness throughout with a pleasant grainy aftertaste. Reminiscent of Heineken, Grolsch, and other pale Euro beers, but better.

Bottle. Poured clouly yellow, with not much head. Very little nose and what there is is of hops and grain. Watery mouthfeel. Flavor is very mild. Not much to this. This may be traditional but that doesn’t make it a good brew. Update: Had a second bottle of this. This time I drank it first, instead of following an IPA which may have spoiled the comparison. Feel a little beter about it this time. Actually faiirliy decent drinking beer. I am raising the rating to better represent what I think is a fair assesment.

Bottle. Poured a slightly hazy golden color. Not to much aroma, a littl ebit of bitterness. Clean, bitter finish, nice mouthfeel for a "small" beer. Has all of the traditional bitter qualities. Slightly fruity, yet malty with a clean bitter aftertaste. I enjoyed this beer and its great that its low in ABV, can have something else afterwards.

This stuff is horrible. Terrible aroma of water and grains. Light brown appearance. The palate is watery thin. The taste is watery and grainy. This ranks right up there with Miller Light in my book.
