Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Anchor Small beer (small being the operative word) pores a hazy gold with little head, little if any aroma, crisp "draw" but uneventful flavor, the beer is a good idea but isn’t a good beer

Pours a golden amber color with a large, rocky, white head. Aroma is grainy with a touch of hops. Thin mouthfeel, along with a light taste, make this beer quite drinkable. Can taste some hops that balance well with the grains (It just tastes grainy to me!). A nice beer.

Bottled: Golden coloured. LIght dusty. Medium sized off white ehad. Aroma and flavour is sweet and fruity with light herbal notes. Quite smooth and easy to drink. I medium bodied. Ends on a light bitter and rather fresh note. Surprisingly good for the low ABV.

The aroma had sweet malt notes, and hints of dark fruit. The beer poured a light brown color w/ orange highlights; slight head and lacing. The flavor had malts, slight hops, spice, grpefruits, and slight raisins. The mouthfeel was creamy, light bodied, and bitter.

Bottle, at home. Orange with a large white head, mostly diminishing, fair lacings. Aroma moderate malty, heavy hoppy. Flavor moderate sweet, heavy bitter and yet round. Light body, watery, soft carbonated.

Honestly wasn’t expecting much from this but found the crisp hop character surprising for such a low ABV. Easy drinking.

Pours a light gold, thin white head and nice lace. Aroma herbal and floral with a light pale malt background. Flavor is a bit weak but to be expected form such a low abv beer, hoppy and lightly bitter in the end. Slightly metallic and slightly astringent from the extra sparging but still pretty good and easy drinking.

This beer introduces itself with a mild aroma of hops mixed with honey and wheat. It is a bronze colored solution with a decent white head. This moderate bodied beer has a bitterness that slightly dries the mouth. There is a mild nutty taste that has a hint of honey in the background. A hearty bitter taste is left as an aftertaste.
