Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Bright, coppery orange with an eggshell cover. Light caramel aroma with subtle, noble hops as well as some citrusy hops. Soda watery hops bitterness that’s not offset enough by caramel and body, though there is some crystal malt character. A bit lemony and with a touch of nutty raisin. Light body and a lingering bitterness. Small is what this beer is.

Pours a medium brown with red hues. Aromas of hops, malts, and a slight nose of nuts. Flavor is hoppy, with a sweet malt taste. Was watery towards the end.

Had one of these at the Winking Lizard. Pours from the 22 oz bottle a clear copper. The big rocky off white head is fully lasting with decent lace. Nose of pine, flowers and spice; fresh and subtle. The brew has surprising depth, fairly bitter of course however, a dominant toasty malt presence establishes character throughout including the finish. The light and dry body is very lively with an astringent feel to the finish.

Bottle. Clear yellow pour with moderate white head. Aroma is false advertising of malts. Taste is watery, very watery. It tastes like a Fullers after I’m done with it.

White head. Clear golden body. Malty aroma. Surprisingly bitter for such a low alcohol beer.

Not impressed, although for 3.3% it did have some flavor. A very light and herbally bitter beer. Resin and hops dominate the flavor and as we all know I’m much more a fan of nice strong complexity maltiness. So...a pass on this one.

Pours copper with a small white head. Smell is very non-distinct with some basic biter notes. Taste is watery, but pleasant. This is very drinkable for a second runnings beer.

Bottle. Weak, hoppy aroma. Copper colour, small white head. Bitter start which stays for a long time. Very good for a beer of this ABV.
