Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Medium, frothy, white head. Clear, copper hue. Wow, smells like a skunked Russian lager. That’s: grain, old bread, skunk and herbs. Lightly sweet, lightly acidic flavor. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish. Fairly flavorless, thankfully. Medium-light body, watery texture, average carbonation.

This was absolute shit. It had a very clear amber color with a small white head. The aroma was of pure skunk, pure skunk, worse than a malt liqour, it had the aroma of some of that lithuanian ass. The taste was brutal as well. I like anchor, dont get me wrong, but what the hell was this? It seriously tasted just like one of those god awful skunked easter europe beers.

Faint malty aroma. Slight spicyness on the palate. Refreshing dry aftertaste. Not the most complex of beers, but you can hardly expect that from the style. Hats of to the breweries that still brew this type of ale !

Low profile malt aroma. Very transparent golden color with a smallish head. This almost tastes like malt liquor! Grainy, grassy flavors with a good bit of bitterness in the fore and some sweetness in the finish. Surely different.

Mild malty aroma, with some grassy notes in the finish. Clean balanced flavour, though a little thin in body.

From the bottle

I like this beer! It’s certainly something different, but for me, it works - in the right setting. Namely, as a big-flavor, thirst-quenching, low-alcohol, dry bitter beer for a summer day.

Pours a light orange. The aroma is lemon and grass, almost like a pilsner. The taste is strong and bitter, with a hard sour twist; the mouthfeel is light but refreshingly so when coupled with the bitter flavor and finish. A very interesting beer, and one that actually hits the spot in the right circumstances. (Admittedly, my enthusiasm declined on the back of the bottle). Bravo to Anchor for producing this one.

Nice hop bite with sweet malt aftertaste. I hesitated in trying this one, but it was a nice drinkable beer.

This golden ale poured with a nice white head, eliciting a malty aroma. The flavor is slighty tart with a somewhat bitter finish. One wouldn’t think that a "second wort" beer would even be drinkable. However, I found this one to be quite refreshing.
