I like this beer! It’s certainly something different, but for me, it works - in the right setting. Namely, as a big-flavor, thirst-quenching, low-alcohol, dry bitter beer for a summer day.
Pours a light orange. The aroma is lemon and grass, almost like a pilsner. The taste is strong and bitter, with a hard sour twist; the mouthfeel is light but refreshingly so when coupled with the bitter flavor and finish. A very interesting beer, and one that actually hits the spot in the right circumstances. (Admittedly, my enthusiasm declined on the back of the bottle). Bravo to Anchor for producing this one. | 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 8, 2005 This golden ale poured with a nice white head, eliciting a malty aroma. The flavor is slighty tart with a somewhat bitter finish. One wouldn’t think that a "second wort" beer would even be drinkable. However, I found this one to be quite refreshing. This is a peice of brewing history, and a feat of brewing the likes of which I haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying in my mouth, its bitterness lingering around the sides of my tongue. Is it magic that this bitter was born of a barleywine? No. It isn’t magic. It’s art. And it’s one of the great brewing pleasures from a great brewing company. Cheers. Aroma is malty, fair amount of caramel, hints of ginger. Flavor is malty, dry, with caramel, orange, mild bitterness that is rather sharp. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 1.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 3/20 | Jun 30, 2005 Has a pissy aroma like a bad lager. Finish is bitter but offensive. Despite a fairly attractive body this one is garbage. I wouldn’t drink this if it was free. There is absolutely nothing rewarding about this beer. It can barely even get you drunk! 3.3%?! Anchor makes some good beers, but this is a joke. boto (1345), Granby, Connecticut, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Jun 25, 2005 22oz bottle: This one pours a slightly darker golden color. It is crystal clear with a small, slightly fizzy head that drops off quickly. The aroma kind of smells like a mass produced lager. It has some weak hints of maltiness and some floral hops. The taste is slightly tart and bitter, with a light malt body. No better than a macro at a higher price. No more for me!
