Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Dark yellow color with small white head. Aroma is malty, fair amount of caramel, hints of ginger. Flavor is malty, dry, with caramel, orange, mild bitterness that is rather sharp.

Has a pissy aroma like a bad lager. Finish is bitter but offensive. Despite a fairly attractive body this one is garbage. I wouldn’t drink this if it was free. There is absolutely nothing rewarding about this beer. It can barely even get you drunk! 3.3%?! Anchor makes some good beers, but this is a joke.

22oz bottle: This one pours a slightly darker golden color. It is crystal clear with a small, slightly fizzy head that drops off quickly. The aroma kind of smells like a mass produced lager. It has some weak hints of maltiness and some floral hops. The taste is slightly tart and bitter, with a light malt body. No better than a macro at a higher price. No more for me!

Discount Liquors - Milwaukee, WI. - 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark golden to light orange with a frothy, creamy white head. Aroma is a little off, slightly baby-diaperish if I had to pin it down and give it a name. Flavor has some good low-level bitterness with faint traces of spruce and not too much else. Mouthfeel is a tad thin and turns a bit metallic near the end. Would make a good session ale.

Copper amber with a decent head and lacing. The aroma of this beer reminded me of a puppys breath! without a doubt this beer smells like when a puppy is licking your face! Flavor is malt with a light body. Easy drinking but boring.

Had a somewhat stale aroma. Gold body with white head. Slightly bitter for the flavor. Might as well had a cheaper Miller Lite like I had on the golf course ealier in the day.

Pale golden yellow color, fizzy white head with quick dissapation. Sharp huskiness and muted floral hop aromatics. Watery nose, acrid floral hop bite next, with a slight malty sweetness. Crisp finish. Mouthfeel is light and astringent.

Definately a thin bodied brew that finishes quite bitter. But this is a thirst quencher. It may not have the fancy aroma or a diverse palate, but it’s good. I like this beer served as cold as it can get and then drink it down in big refreshing gulps. I also like the brewers attention to the history behind the beer--makes me feel like I’m learning something as I drink.
