Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

22 oz bottle: very light amber w/ a lasting, medium white head. Smells like a bitter. Herbal, tobacco hop very much fresh in the nose. Very light on the malt aroma, but at 3.3 ABV, what would you expect? Very light yeasty character w/ a hints of fruity esters. Herbal hoppy flavor, again, light on the malts, some light fruitiness. Light bodied, higher level of carbonation, dry mouthfeel. Overall, very flavorful for a smaller beer. I find it much better that your typical macro swill for the low ABV. Thankfully this is still fresh though, I don’t think I’d want to have this out of date.

(Draught) Clear golden color with a smallish, lacy head. Aromatic-hoppy, flowery and slightly buttery aroma. Aromatic, woody-hoppy flavor with pale malts and butter. Lingering, bitter finish. Slightly sweet and acidic. Light to medium-bodied palate with balanced carbonation. Small beer in every way. Pleasant one, though, for the ABV.

Bottled. Pours a clear golden orange color with a frothy off-white head. The aroma is that of yeast and malt but reminds me of a Sam Adams Boston Lager. The taste is...well...lacking. Bitter and not much else. No malt character. This is my first "small beer" so maybe I just don’t understand the style but it seems to me the grain was spent by the time they sparged this. Adding hops to water doesn’t make beer IMHO. I love Anchor but I don’t like this beer.

Golden color, small head. Light fruity nose. Well hoppied bitter flavor in the watery body. Long bitterish aftertaste.

Best consumed cold-ish as a thirst-quencher at a hot party when a stronger more complex beer would be too much. Either that or mix a bottle with a Foghorn for a great cocktail. Anchor can do a lot better.

Anchor Small - in such a big bottle. I wasn’t sure what to expect out of this one. Golden color, clear, lots of bubbles, short off-white head, some lacing. Aroma was slighly malty/bready. Taste is medium to thin bodied - I sipped at this for about an hour, waiting for it to thicken up a bit - nope, never really did. Hops in this are right up front and all the way through to a medium long finish. I think this would be a great business lunch beer.

Straw colored - fizzy head. Extra malty aroma. Body is thin and mostly uninteresting. Old Foghorn’s red-headed step child for sure. Tastes like a flat Miller Lite. What are you doing putting your name on this Anchor?!?!

This is certainly an interesting concoction. Pours a clear dark orange color with a medium thin eggshell-white head. Thin lacing. The aroma is light toasted malt. Light-bodied and bitter, without much flavor. A bit of earthy malt is there but the general bitterness is all the beer really has. The finish is lightly bitter and lingering. All in all, a nice throwback beer but not one I would go out of my way to have again.
