Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Dark straw/copper colored, with aroma of malt, some hopcit and fruit. I didn;t detect any "off" aromas here. The taste was uninspiring, with some caramel malt, hops, and slight fruit presence. Did Fritz want to make a "small beer", or did Maytag have a bad fiscal quarter?

Thin, smelly, clear, unimpressive. Small beer is not supposed to be good. Considering the history and the process, Anchor’s effort is what it should be: not so horribly bad, but obviously not first-rate. It’s fun to see that some old-timey methods are still being used, but it’s easy to see why some methods have become mere history.

Thin for sure, but not as easy to beat up on as most have done here! Nice limey/orange rind hoppiness and some thin malts that are actually sort of granly but balance well. Interesting style, light and refreshing, probably better suited for a hot day, maybe a good "lawnmower beer", but I’m sitting here watching it snow!

A disappointing brew. Nice color and hoppy aroma, but the flavor was way too watery. Hop presence detectable in flavor, along with wet cardboard and almost no malt presence.

Mildly hoppy, grainy nose. Light copper coloured with thick, large-bubbled white head that diminishes to thin ring. Lifeless looking. Husky flavours and strong bitterness without much supporting malt body. Seems like it’s both oversparged and overhopped. Light, watery body. Astringent. Bottle.

Aroma like a sewer, bad. Appearance is yellow, ok head. Notes from Foghorn is in the flavor, but its way too thin.

Funky, funky, funky. Smells like shoe polish, tastes like spent grains. Really bitter, but in a bad way. Tanniny. I actually feel as if I have wheat and barley husks in my mouth. Can taste the remants of an Old Foghorn buried deep in there somewhere. This has dashed my idea of making a barleywine and an IPA from the second runnings. Phenominal lacing.
