Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Deep golden out of the bottle with a nice white head. Nose of toast and faint citrus. Flavor has some citrus notes over an almost grainy malts. Finish is a lot of harsh hop astringency. Decent lawn mower beer.

A good, refreshing beer for hot weather drinking, reminiscent of a wheat beer; and then the hops hit. Clear, light amber with " tiny bubbles" lasting to the end. The head was tight, not creamy and also endured to the bottom of the glass.

Light golden brown pour. Thin white foamy head. Little roasty and malt smell. Taste is bitter and sticky. Not to bitter, but enough to notice.

Amber pour with a small head and some lacing. Toasted bread for the nose. Some roast, but it is almost like buttered (light butter) toast. Flavor is again roasty and toasty. Nice. I’m liking it. Finishes with malt and spice.

Copper amber color with light fizzy head and some sticky lacing. The aroma is sooo toasty and malty with some roast and a faint toasty malt, no hops. The flavor is mild, a bit "worty" with some light hops and a bit more laquerish toasty flavor. You can tell the foghorn similarities but it’s odd. Finishes a bit tangy and malty. Damn, if this is what peasents drank back in the day then I sure as hell would be making my own beer at home. Thanks John’s!

Golden-amber with nice head. Hoppy aroma (pine). Flavor is mostly hop as well with a long raw bitter finish. Nice mouthfeel.

Bottle poured into an ale glass. Small white head fully dissipated. Golden yellow and sparkling a bit with very active carbonation. The aroma was quite nice, some toast and dough blending together. Didn’t taste like it smelled: not sweet at all, it was moderately bitter and acetic, and somewhat salty. It got saltier in the finish, and it stayed bitter and acetic. It was an, um...interesting taste, and I wouldn’t say it was better than some macros although it seemed more ambitious. I’m glad Anchor could include me in this continuation of beer-making tradition, but I think this is a one-taster.

Bottle - a touch of malt and maybe a hint of skunk. A beer this small just cannot age or travel very well, so it is not completely unexpected. Looks almost like an American Standard. Maybe a touch deeper color in the body. Very nice head and retention, though. Flavor is okay, but there is just not enough to this beer to be very interesting.
