Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Hey why throw out those once used malts. This is a recycler’s beer if there ever was one. The aroma is dry and bitter with sharp hops. The flavor is a bit acrid and quite bitter (I mean pucker-bitter). The color is very pale with large bubbled carbonation that fizzes away in your mouth. Not the best tasting beer but definately one you can guzzle. I really liked it.

Heh, big bottle for a small beer (i keed, i keed!). Beautiful golden color with a difficult to discern aroma. Huge macro budcoorsmiller flavor. Slightly fizzy mouthfeel, but a refreshing palate. This would appeal to the masses, but they’d probably shy away from it thinking it was "some fancy microbrew".

Sampled at the brewery. This is Anchor’s "dump" beer, but is pretty decent for how it’s processed. I would problaly not try it again.

On tap at the brewery. I had very little expectation for this beer being any good at all, but I was plesantly surprised. The aroma and flavor had a nice mild hop presence that made this beer quite enjoyable. I think I may have liked this one even better than the Summer Beer.

First time encountering this beer, but the experience was less than satisfying. Has a clear straw-colored body topped by a thin off-white head and a bitter hops aroma. The flavor is a very mediocre bitter, dry, cerealy affair with just a hint of sweetness. Very much like many macro-lagers. I can best describe the flavor as a "used and abused" dirtiness. Grassy. Not terrible but it does have fine company in the Budweisers and Millers that occupied nearby shelf space.

Golden color. Quite nice Barley Wine-like aroma. Really thin body, with an exaggerated bitterness. Odd…

Clear light orange with very little head. More like a lager, not much aroma or taste. I wont buy this again.

Sampled from bottle at Danish Beer Festival 2004 (#35).
Clear dark orange beer with a disappearing head. Aroma is weak, little malt and Anchor yeast. Flavor is thin and watery with a bit of malt and bitter hops. Has the distinctive Anchor taste.
