Commercial Description:
The tradition of brewing two distinct beers from one mash has existed for thousands of years, and for centuries the term "small beer" was used in English to describe the lighter and weaker second beer. We make our Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale from the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, and Anchor Small Beer is our attempt to duplicate the "small beers" of old by sparging that same mash: sprinkling warm water over the Old Foghorn mash after the first wort has run off, thereby creating a second, lighter brew from the resulting thinner wort. We believe you will find Anchor Small Beer delicious—similar to what modern brewers call a "bitter"—and we hope you will also enjoy the idea of reviving an ancient brewing tradition, which is something of great importance.

Bottle. Pale amber colour with a creamy white head. Aroma is pretty decent. Soft and fruity with alot of orange marmalade character. EKG and Fuggles gives a fairly prominent hoppy aroma. Malts smell lightly crackery. The flavour comes across a bit muddled however. Fairly watery palate. There are a lot of good components in this beer, but it just never really comes together all that well. It’s pretty authentic, not terrible but not great either.

From a bottle at Hop Leaf in Chicago. I drank this during a dinner with Graham, Tara and John during my first vacation. Anchor Small Beer is a cloudy copper color with a steady off-white head. Whitle the aroma is faint at best, the flavor is very nice. This is a beer that I could drink all day in the sun and enjoy thuroughly. I also find it fun and interesting to try a bitter. I like the history behind the brew.

Bottled (thanks whoever sent this is a trade, found in my cellar). Pale ambery golden colour with small off-white head. Aroma is wood and quite harsh skunky earthyness. Flavour is earthy, grassy, a bit wooden and also has some slight fruity notes lurking in the background. A bit harsh as for the earthyness, but otherwise quite nice.

Very clear. This beer looks like ginger ale. There is a nice foamy head that lasts. Too filtered for me. There is a slight pilsner/bitter aroma. Not very pungent. A kind of weak skunky pilsner taste. This beer was sort of cheap, so I am not too upset. There is a nice bittering and flavoring hop. The beer is watered down, but I like the bitter aspect of it, and really that is all. Also, the ABV is crap. Just a weak bitter/pilsner if you ask me.

Pale golden caramel color that gets darker at the center and lightens at the edges. A thick finger of off white head that leaves sticky bits of lacing. Aroma is tannic second runnings, light toffee and caramel. Taste is grainy malts with a hop bitter and tannic finish.

Deep golden yellow to orange with a thin fading white head. Aroma of pale malts, citrus, malt and sewer funk. Taste of burnt malt and funk. Weak, watery, not a lot going on here.

Maybe I got a bad bottle, but this tasted rather poor and passing it around, three people all agreed. If I had done a blind taste test, I think this would have lost to coors lite.

crystal clear yellow/orange, no head, has that anchor steam nose, bittered all of the way through the flavor, piney flavor, light body, this beer is really lacking a bready biscuit toast flavor that could totally turn this from sort of a blah beer to a true bitter, but i understand that’s not possible with the whole ’small beer’ concept, maybe make the foghorn toastier too ;)
