Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Bottle. Copper color with dense white head and ample effervescence. Aroma of grain, light malt and spice. Sweetgrass predominates in flavor with a barely-there fruity backbone and very light spice, little bitterness. Finish and mouthfeel are crisp and clean. I wasn’t overly impressed with the flavor and aroma of this one but I would drink it over most lagers any day. Looking forward to a second tasting to boost my perception.

Pours pure copper with standard white head. Aroma is light and includes malt, and honestly, I can’t get much else. That’s not to say the malt is strong. Flavor is grainy, some malt, some hops at the end. Crisp and carbonated. It’s odd to think since it’s a staple, but this is actually one of my least favorites from Anchor.

I’ve been saving this once since last fall, since I picked it up at a 7-11 in San Francisco, and it tasted a helluva a lot better than the first time I had it (1976!). Maybe my tastes have changed (for the better)... This one comes with a sweet label, pouring a nice, rich copper colour, and it is well carbonated. The head is on the small side, being a foamy tan. The aroma is lightly malted. Taste is again lightly malted, being crisp and clean. I also liked the mouthfeel and aftertaste. If only this stuff was more easily come by where I live...

I had a six pack of these one night, and a few hours later they were all gone! Was it the half-decent aroma, the just-allright pour? There’s a nice dark maltiness going on here, and it’s eminently drinkable stuff. Perhaps -too- drinkable..... where did they all go?

22 oz bottle, as Fourth of July 2009 drew to a close. Pours reddish amber with a good sized, long lasting white head. Taste is understated, with notes of malt, caramel, and hops. This is my first try of a California Common, and the unique brewing technique is really evident. There are subtle ale-like notes but it’s smooth enough to drink even in the heat, when you might normally want something lighter. Good stuff.
