Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

This beer has a fruity malty aroma. Flavor of caramel, malt and brown sugar. Well balanced with a nice bitterness.

Pours amber with a nice but small dissipating head. Aroma is weak but pleasant, smells like a decent lager. Smooth and sparkling carbonation, fairly refreshing, could definitely gulp. Nice aftertaste which subsides into a slight bitterness. Decent flavours up front, good, not great.

Got this beer solely to rate the style. I actually had this before with JRedmond, remembered I hated it but thought I’d give it another shot. Well, not a whole lot has changed. Notes of corn and malt. Thin palate. Disappointing.

Bottle. Hazy orange brown in color, foamy white head. Fairly mild aroma, mild grassy hops, light malts. Not much carbonation, overall thin mouthfeel, relatively thin on flavor too. some bitter hops up front that linger throughout, also mild yeast, very mild malts. Drinkable, but not interesting.

35.5cl bottle from Systembolaget. Best before 2011-04-01. It poured a golden colour with a medium big white foamy head that settled down slowly in the glass. Aroma is grassy with some notes of malts and grain. The flavour is somewhat bitter, but not as bitter as most lagers. Flavour is grassy, notes of malts and hops. It has a short aftertaste. Overall a bit bland beer, but definately drinkable and it get’s an extra point i appearance because I think the bottle looks cool.

Pours clear gold with a thin white head. Smells grassy with some roast malt. Taste is like corn and is pretty regular. Pretty nice body but taste is lacking.

Although this beer is just average overall, and I’ve had numerous times over the years, it has become special to me due to my visit to the brewery in 07. The tour, the copious amounts of free samples and the city itself has lifted this beer up in my book. The beer is amber in color and very well balanced with some smooth malt and a crisp finish. There really isn’t much else to say about the beer, other than it is a good one. A beginner’s beer.
