Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

As a California Common, this brew is a bit uncommon in the rest of the USA. Pours a clear amber with no head and little to no lacing. The taste is unique with refreshingly light fruit and malts. A pretty good beer, and one of the best that i had in this style. Though easily not the best from Anchor. LC

Bought as a novelty - its not too bad. Nothing very special, either.
Slightly malty, smooth and sessionable. Pretty neat for a novelty.

She shines like polished copper in the clear California skies, glinting and sparkling with flashes of amber and orange playing tricks with my eyes. A puffy white head floats lazily atop her crown as if a cloud had fallen from the sky to perch quite happily there. Like a gentle summer breeze, her nose embraces me with fresh lemon and sweet honey warmed by the sun. Fresh dough, cereal grains, and malt keep her full-bodied and strong while maple, cinnamon, and summer fruits such as peaches and melons liven things up a bit. As tantalizing as her nose is, tis her brew that I savor the most and my first quaff is bright lemon juice and savory peaches and melon drenched in honey. A faint presence of bitter grapefruit and dry grass lingers in the back of her palate while a frothy mouthfeel makes way for a bready fullness of warm white bread and cereal grains. A growing bitter presence in her finish does not detract from her overall palate of peach skins, melon, and honey. Instead, their balance is perfect, and each refreshing quaff leads easily into the next until there is nothing left to savor but our treasured memories.

I could drink Anchor Steam any day, every day. It is easy to see how the thirsty hunters of gold quenched their hopes and dreams with this golden elixir that sparkled in the light of hope and promise. Anchor Steam Beer is a great doorway beer for the new and curious beer adventurer, and always a great fall-back for the tried and tested beer gourmand.

An amber beer with a fine head. The aroma is slightly malty and the flavor is slightly acidic with a soft malty tone...it is what it is...
