Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

An amber beer with a fine head. The aroma is slightly malty and the flavor is slightly acidic with a soft malty tone...it is what it is...

12 oz. bottle (2008). Classic beer in a classic style. Amber w/ a decent head. Nutty flavor w/ a peaty hops profile. Subdued finish. Nothing special, but a classic.

Have had bottles but lately its been on draft. Brown in color with an off white head. Aroma is sweet and taste has a slightly metalic odd bitterness. Not all bad, pretty drinkable.

Bottle, Rehills, Newcastle. A traditional tasting bitter, with a pleasant tanginess. Mine was well chilled, but still had bags of flavour.Good hoppy bitterness, slightly citric and put me in mind of a proper English bitter........

1 Pint, 6 oz. bottle, thanks Roei and Natalie. Medium sized fluffy dense lasting head. Clear rusty orange colour. aromas of peach, grapefruit and flowery notes. Strong subtle bitterness acompanied by notes of sweet grapefruit and orange marmalade. Aftertaste short and unimpressive, light to medium body. Feels very much like a pale ale but with a strong hoppy flavours and aromas, and a strong hoppy lager bitterness.

12 oz bottle. I’ve had this one many times, but never rated. Simple light aroma but appetizing. Notes of spicy, herbal grass, light citrus, a pilsner-like yeastiness, some caramels and pale grains as well. Poured a decent creamy, milky white head, decent retention and almost no lacing, light but not watery looking, mild carbonation, and golden amber in color. This beer overall has a good uniqueness too it, though there’s really not that much going on, just different than other beers. Quite crisp, not overly carbonated, light-medium feel. Fairly bitter with some light herbal and slightly spicy lager grass, then more a minor citrus zest in the finish. Some type of gourd fruit is in there as well, caramels, and light pale grain. Overall, a good beer without much flaw, it just isn’t that special. It will continue to be one of my first recommendations to my non-beer nerd friends who are looking to try something a little different at a bar.

Bottle. Light pumpkin brown pour and a nice malt aroma. Flavor was oats, some citrus and finished smooth and light. Been a while since I’ve had this, I forgot how good this stuff is.
