Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

On tap among a plethora of boring beers at at Croxley Rockville Centre. Amber with lasting head and lace. Mild caramel aroma. Very milld toasty caramel with grassy bittereness. Light watery body and medium carbo. Not sure of this cuts it anymore.

Bottle Stirchley Wines Birmingham. This was probably the first US beer I tasted from a smaller brewery back in the early 90s. Slightly hazy amber colour with a medium off white head. Aroma was nothing to shout about. Muted dusty malt and hop. Lack of real body. Bready flavour with caramel malt and corn notes. Not the greatest beer from the Anchor stable but passable.

Aroma of dough, very malty aroma... The richness of the aroma does not translate into rich taste.... Slighty hoppy, mostly malty.... Smooth, but i just dont understand the hype...

355 ml bottle. Pours a clear deep orange gold with a moderate but disappearing slightly off white head. Light malty aroma with a hint of hoppiness. Light toasty maltiness in the taste with a vague fruitishness and slight hoppy bitterness. Light to medium body, buttery finish. Solid though not overwhelming beer.

(10/26/08) Bottle sampled on the streets of Brooklyn. Slightly hazy amber with a big beige head. Aroma is rather malty with bready notes, light fruity hints and some hoppiness. Sweetish malty flavor flavor with light fruitiness, bread and a rather bitter finish with hops. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. A nice easy-drinking beer.
