Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Bottled. Pours a clear copper body with a thin head with some lacing. Nose is banana, clove, maybe coriander, licorice, and citrus. Flavor is the same plus some sweet biscuit malt. A little too bitter and unbalanced. Not great but acceptable.

12 oz bottle. Poured a hazy copper color. Nose was light, with some noticeable malt flavoring. I think I need to re rate this when I get a fresher one, because this is one of those beers that is much better fresh, and does not improve with age.I remember this being a very nice malty beer, with some light hop flavor, but this staler one did not do it justice.

Bottle, bbe 12/08. Amber, small pale head. Little honey, fruits and maltiness on the nose. Mildly hopped, dry fruity flavor, malts and little yeast. Medium bodied, average carbonation. Easy drinking and somewhat fruity, but didn’t feel very fresh.

Caramel colored pour with a long lasting head and sporadic lacing. The flavor leaves a lager-like aftertaste and has some mild but lingering hops in the body. Not bad but not near as great as its reputation.

On tap-Flying Saucer Cordova. A nice deep amber pour. A well hopped brew with a very satisfying mouthfeel/palate.

Not a bad beer, for a classic. Pours a golden copper with a bubbly white head. Has a strong aroma of roasted malt with flavor of hops and a bit of water. Slightly lagery in the finish. Respectable beer.

Poured gold with a nice head. The aroma was very pleasant hops. The beer was very clean, a good balance of hoppiness and it was definately a very drinkable beer. This is a classic that would make a great session beer.
